Together 1/1

"No, Mulder. Not this time."
He stares at her, as though not quite believing what she just said.
"Why?" he sounds petulant, like a little kid and really, what is he but that?
A kid who wants everything his own way. But she's had enough. Enough of his
wild goose chases, government conspiracies and enough of his demons. She
has enough of her own now. It won't be long until she's finally welcomed into
that final embrace. She knows it, and if he'd only admit it, Mulder knows it
too.

"Why?" she echoes. "You want me to list reasons?"
"I thought you'd be interested. Don't you want to know what happened?"
"No. It doesn't matter anymore. Not now. Nothing matters when you're dying."
"Stop it, Scully! You are not going to die!"
"What's wrong, Mulder? Does the truth hurt?" Oh, God, when had it turned to
this? When had friendship and respect turned to bitterness and recrimination?
All they seemed to do was hurt each other.
She needed to hurt, to be hurt, it made her feel alive. But Death was coming
and there was nothing either of them could do about it.

"So you won't come with me?" asks Mulder.
"No, Mulder. If you want to be regressed again, go ahead. Just leave me out
of it. I don't think it works. I don't trust those memories and I don't think
you should. But it's up to you." She turns away from him, looking at the wall
and wishes, not for the first time, that their office has a window. Their
office, ha! It is his office, his quest, his search. She has just been
dragged along for the ride, been abducted and given cancer because of him. But
when she looks at him, at his little boy lost look, her heart melts, as do
her eyes. She feels the wetness on her cheek, but does nothing to stop it.

Suddenly Mulder is there and crushes him to her in the tightest hug she ever
had and she breaks down sobbing aginst his chest.
"I'm sorry, Scully. I'm so sorry. I know all this is my fault. I'll never
forgive myself. Never." he releases her from his hug and looks deep into her
eyes. Scully sees in them something that has been thre for a while. But which
she has either not noticed or ignored. In Mulder's eyes, was love, and, God,
desire. He wants her and she feels her own body respond to the look he gave
her.

He kisses her long and deep. She doesn't want it to end, but she ends it.
"No, Mulder. We can't."
"Why? Because some burecrat says so?"
"No, because I say so. It wouldn't be fair. It wouldn't be fair on you."
"What do you mean?"
"It will only hurt more when I'm gone. Let's face it, Mulder. There's no point
in getting involved with a dying woman." As if to prove her point, a few drops
of blood drip from her nose. She goes to the bathroom to freshen up.

When she returns, Mulder is standing by his desk, deep in thought. He is
crunching a sunflower seed between his teeth, his tongue darting out to lick
his lips. Scully finds the sight incredibly erotic, but quickly puts a lid on
those feelings. Mulder turns to face her and open his arms. She hesitates at
first, but then willingly embraces him. He kisses her forehead.
"You're right, Scully. It wouldn't be fair to get involved with a dying
woman. That's why I'm going to find a cure. I'll never give up."

Scully lay her head against his chest and she knew he was right. If he wasn't
going to give up, then neither was she. They would face it as they had faced
everything before.

Together.
