THE TORMENT

Time had fled from him long ago, it knew it had no business here. No
business in this bright room full of metal tables and even sharper
instruments. No business when he was tied to one of those tables. No
business when he had no way of escaping. What use was time when there
was no day, no night, no knowledge of its passing?

Time was not where he was, but the pain and torture were eternal.

Should he count the screams when THEY approached him with metal
needles to pierce his brain, his ears, his eyes? Would that make
it all the more bearable, or would it just increase his torment,
knowing how long it lasted?

He had thought he was a brave man, but he wasn't as brave as he
thought. He was terrified, not of death, he would welcome death, as
it would mean an end to his suffering, he was terrified that this
torment would never end, that he would go mad from the pain.

So far he was still sane, still aware of who he was, of where he
was. And through the pain, he thought of her, a red-haired
angel, a blurred picture of her on one of the tables in place of him.

She had not told him what had happened to her, said she had no memory
of it. Or was she just trying to spare him the truth of her pain?

Oh, Scully. This is what THEY did to you? Did THEY invade your body,
your mind, your soul? How did you endure it?

He screamed, a low howl of anguish that tore at his chest and made his
throat ache, but the anguish was not for him, it was for her. His pain
dimmed in comparison to what THEY had put her through, and he knew
know how THEY had tortured him, without ever physically touching him.

THEY were in his mind, showing him what THEY had done to her. What
THEY had done to Scully, what he feared had been done to her. All THEY
needed to do was show him her pain and he was tormented beyond belief.

Oh, THEY were clever, weren't THEY? Knowing which buttons to push,
knowing that Scully's pain would be unbearable, knowing that he had
caused it.

His mind shut down after that. He no longer knew where he was, who he
was. In his mind, there was a red-haired angel, flying on gossamer
wings, beckoning to him, speaking to him, words he couldn't hear.

But they echoed in his head anyway.

"Ssh, Mulder. It's okay."
