Great song, by the way. **************** True Companion By Megan Sullivan **************** As she opened her apartment door, Scully began to laugh. Mulder was standing on her doorstep wearing his full winter regalia. And a blanket of snow. He clutched a large white bag in his arms. Scully took the bag out of his hands and ushered him in. Before entering, he shook some of the snow off his clothing. She laughed even harder. "Scully, I show up at your apartment in the middle of a blizzard and I bring Chinese food and all you can do is stand there and laugh at me," he said, his face a mask of mock sadness. She simply grinned at him. "Sure, you come bearing food. But you also bear work. And besides, you look like an Eskimo. Or maybe the abominable snowman. I can't tell which," she said as she hurried towards the kitchen with the food. "Make yourself at home," she called over her shoulder. He hung his coat on a hook and followed her into the kitchen. "No way I'm leaving you alone with the food. I've seen you eat." She turned and gave him the evil eye, then handed him two plates from the cabinet. He took the plates and the food and headed back into the living room. "Hey!" she cried, grabbing two iced teas out of the refrigerator. "There had better be some left for me when I get in there." He just laughed. **************** Empty plates sat on the table as Mulder and Scully peered at case files. "Scully, I don't understand where you're coming from. Why would she chase someone she doesn't even know into some third world country? It doesn't make sense." "But Mulder, we don't know that they were total strangers. They had plenty of opportunities to meet." "Then why doesn't anyone know about this friendship?" "Maybe it was more than a friendship, Mulder. To me, this looks like the classic forbidden romance. She loves him but knows she can't have him. So she pines away in secret, never letting you know how I feel. She gets the chance and goes after him, hoping that they can be together," she said, turning her attention back to the file. Mulder looked at her curiously. "Scully..." he began. She looked up into his eyes and seeing his startled look, realized her slip of the tongue. She felt her stomach twist into a knot. "Oh God," she whispered. She stood up, the file falling from her lap to the floor. She looked at him again. He was staring. "Oh God," she said again, her voice cracking. She ran towards the door, grabbing her parka before throwing the door open and running out. Regaining his composure, Mulder jumped off the couch. "Scully!" he called. He grabbed his still damp coat off the hook and ran after her, down the stairs and out the door. Once outside, he stopped in the falling show and scanned the area. He spotted her about half a block away. "Scully!" he cried again. She spun around and he could see the tears streaming down her face. "Scully, wait!" She spun back around and started to run again, but slipped on the ice and fell to the ground. "Scully!" he cried, running to her. He reached her side and squatted down next to her. "Scully, are you ok?" She looked up at him, snow in her eyelashes and nodded. "Fine, Mulder," she choked. "But please, just leave me alone. " She attempted to stand, but he had placed his hands on her knees, holding her down. She looked up at him, face flushed, tears still streaming down her face. "No wait," he said. "I have to say this first." "Mulder, I..." she interjected. "Scully, please." He took a deep breath. "Scully, we've known each other for quite a few years. You know me better than anyone else; I'm sure of that. And you know that I've been searching for my sister most of my life. But I've been searching for something else too. Everyone everywhere looks for his or her true companion. I'm no different from everyone else. "I know I'm not perfect. I'm far from it, but you already know that too. Sometimes I can be a total jerk, and I'm really sorry for all the times I've abandoned you. But when it comes to you, something just clicks inside of me. I don't always know what to say, so I just abandon you, using that as my method of escape. And so when you said that you love me, I didn't know what to say. I'm a complete fool when it comes to love. "Scully, I would do anything for you, anything. I would follow you to the ends of the earth. Hell, I already have. But there's nothing that can stop me from being with you. Not the FBI, not the Men in Black, not Frohike, not even the little green men." He paused for a long breath. "So I guess the reason I'm bearing my soul to you is because I love you, Scully. I'm in love with you. I've stopped searching for that special someone in life because I've found her. You are my true companion." Scully still had tears streaming down her face. She didn't speak. Mulder sat nervously, waiting for some reaction. Finally, she spoke. "Really?" she asked quietly. He sighed and grinned widely. "Really." She began to smile and blush. "Wow," she said. He laughed and reached for her hand, closing his fingers around it. "Yeah, wow." He rubbed his thumb against the back of her hand. "Now, how about we go back inside." She blushed again. "I think I sprained my ankle when I fell." He smiled and stood up, helping her to her feet. He wrapped his arms around her, hugging her tightly against his body. After a moment, he pulled back and ran the back of his index finger along her jawbone, tilting her head in the process. He gently leaned his head down, allowing their lips to brush gently. He pulled back for a moment, then leaned in to kiss her again, this time with more passion. He gently parted his lips and ran his tongue against her lips, coaxing them apart. She willingly parted her lips to grant him entrance. He ran his tongue along her teeth and gently caressed her tongue. She moaned softly into his mouth. With a grin, he broke the kiss, his smile pressing against hers. "Come on, Scully. Let's go inside." She nodded her agreement. He wrapped his arm around her waist for support and together, they began to walk towards the building. They were partners, friends, and soon would be lovers, but for tonight, they were just true companions. Finis - 11/4/1998
