Disclaimer: Mulder, Scully, and Skinner don't belong to me. Duh! So please don't sue me! :-) This is my very first attempt at writing fanfic so please please please give me your feedback! Thanks! ~jen the hyper cow~ Trust Is Two-Sided Mulder was sitting down watching the basketball game on TV when he heard a knock at the door. He glanced at the clock. 11:39. "I wonder who would want me at this hour?" Mulder mused to himself. "Who is it?" He called. "It's Dana" A voice answered back. "Scully?" Mulder went over and unlocked the door. "What's up?" One look at her face and he knew something was wrong. He ushered her inside. Then he noticed what she was wearing. Instead of the professional business clothes he was used to seeing her in she was wearing a pair of faded blue jeans and an oversized sweater. "Well?" He questioned. "What's the matter?" "I've wanted to talk to you about something" She was fidgeting, wringing her hands, and twisting her hair. "What's bothering you?" Mulder was unaccustomed to seeing this side of Scully, vulnerable, nervous, like a frightened child. He reached over and turned the TV off and sat in the chair directly opposite her. "Scully please! You have to trust me." Scully shifted in her seat. "It's about Cancer Man and his agents. I know that they have stopped threatening us since the death of my sister and your father but I'm worried that they will once again come after us since everything has died down. We know too much of the truth. We are too close to finding it and I'm scared to keep looking." Tears glistened in her eyes and she turned away. "Mulder I'm terrified. I'm not even sure that Krycek is dead. What if he's not?" "Scully... Dana, please believe me! I won't ever let anything hurt you, ever." Mulder got up from the chair and put his arms around her and felt her shaking like a scared animal. She had tears openly flowing down her face but kept most of her composure. "Mulder, I'm also scared that you'll get hurt." She pulled away and looked at him. "But I'm the one who got you into this mess! It should be me! I'll never forgive myself for doing this to you." Mulder ran his hand through his hair, a clear sign he was upset about something. "If anything happens to you it will be my fault and that can't, it won't happen." He sat back down and put a hand on her arm. "Scully, we can stop looking for the truth but that doesn't mean it won't find us." Scully sighed, a sign of resignation. "Mulder, I know you won't stop looking until you find the truth and I don't intend to let you find it on your own. Whatever happens, we're in this together. If I quit now it's almost certain death for me and you to keep others from knowing what we already do." She got up and stood at the window. "I should be going. I'm sorry, this whole thing was stupid." Scully got up and went to the door. "Scully, wait!" He caught her hand and she turned around and looked at him. "If you ever need anything I'll be here, remember that." He held her gaze for a moment before dropping her hand and looking away. She thanked with a shaky smile and opened the door. "Oh and Scully, be careful." Scully walked out and Mulder shut the door behind her. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Scully walked out of the building and into her car. Before she drove off she looked up at Mulder's window and saw his shadow pacing across the room. "What have I gotten myself into?" She thought to herself. She wiped the remaining tears from her eyes and vowed to help Mulder until the finish to find out what happened to her sister, his father and especially his sister. Meanwhile Mulder was trying to make sense of what Scully said. Also what he felt when she told him all of that. He really was worried that she might get hurt but that was how it always was. But he always thought she could take care of herself. "She can!" A voice told him vehemently. "It's not your job!" That stupid voice. Mulder wished it would stop. "I know she can but I want to do it for her" Mulder thought back. "Why?" The voice snarled. "If only I knew" Mulder sighed. He walked over to the TV and was soon engrossed in the game. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Scully unlocked the door and walked inside her house. She put some water on to make some coffee. "Why am I making coffee? I want to go to sleep!" Scully said to herself. She turned the water off and walked into the bathroom. "What have I become?" She muttered staring into the mirror. Over the last few days she had grown pale and gaunt. "I have to get some sleep." Scully didn't bother changing into pajamas and got into bed. "Why are they making me do this to him? Why me? Oh God, I can't, I won't, be a secret agent for *them*. They'll have to kill me first" Scully tossed and turned. "Which is exactly what they'll do." Mulder was on his was to his basement office in the H. J. Hoover building. Skinner stopped him on the way with a case book in hand. "Another wild goose chase, Sir?" Mulder quipped with a wry smile. "Just your usual stuff." Skinner didn't return the grin. "Agent Scully and yourself are assigned to the case. Read it and begin your investigation immediately. Agent Scully is on her way." Skinner returned to his office without waiting for a reply. "Yes sir!" Mulder replied with a mock salute. "I wonder what's up his ass?" Mulder walked into his office and hung up his suit jacket. He sat down on his chair and cleared some of the clutter off his desk by pushing it on the floor. "Mm, a kidnapping? Sounds too normal for me." At that point Scully walked into his office. "How you doing today?" Mulder asked. He was thinking about last night. "I'm fine. About last night... It was dumb, I shouldn't have bothered you" She was having trouble looking at him. Every time she did, it brought a rush of emotions. "He's not supposed to be here. He should be dead." Scully thought to herself. She was having a hard time keeping her indifferent front up. "Scully, it's OK. You would have done the same for me." Mulder handed her the file. Scully shook her head. "I've read it." She couldn't bear not having him know what they wanted to do with him. "Mulder let's get ready to go." She jotted something on a piece of paper and handed it to him. It read, "Have to talk. Not here. Office is bugged. Follow me." Mulder looked at her in silent amazement. He grabbed his coat and followed her out of the door. They walked down to the bus stop and got on the first bus that came. "Well?" Mulder asked. Scully shook her head. "Wait." They got off and Scully lead him to a rental car agency. After they rented a car and had taken it onto the highway heading towards New York Scully started to talk. "Mulder, when I came to your apartment last night, it wasn't just to tell you of my fears. I was sent for a purpose. It was an evil purpose. I was sent to kill you." Scully bowed her head in preparation for the possible physical and mental blows to follow. To her surprise Mulder remained silent with his hands on the wheel. He took the next exit and pulled into a deserted park. Then he turned of the ignition and got out of the car without saying a word. Scully was so surprised that she didn't react for a moment. Then she got out of the car and followed him a short distance behind. He went over to a bench near a small pond and sat down with his head in his hands. Scully was about to go over when she saw his back shake and knew he was crying. She walked over anyway and said, "I'm sorry Mulder." Mulder didn't respond for a few moments. Mulder looked up. "Do you know what it's like to be betrayed by the person you thought was your closest friend? Do you?" Mulder asked with tears silently running down his face. "Sorry isn't enough. Nothing is enough. Of all people they had to use you. I guess I can be grateful that I'm still alive can't I? Oh God! Of all people I trusted you! Then this happens. I guess it teaches me never to get close to anyone doesn't it? I let you see too much of my other side. You had to use that against me." He turned away and started to fidget. "Why didn't you kill me? Was it a sudden attack of guilt?" Mulder had calmed down and was pacing across the shore of the pond. A sudden breeze blew and tousled his hair. "Mulder, I wasn't going to kill you. I never was. I wanted *them* to pick me as the person to kill you so that you would remain safe. I wanted to warn you. I knew that it was possible that both of us would die but it was better odds then if *they* sent someone who didn't care about you. I couldn't tell you then because then *they* would have killed us both without a doubt. *They* still might. *They* probably know that I told you of their plans and either will kill us both or let it die as *they* did before. You of all people should know I wouldn't hurt you." Scully sat down on the bench and looked at his back. He slowly turned around and looked at her with mixed feelings. He waited a moment before replying. "Thank you Dana." It came out barely more then a whisper. He sat down on the bench next to her. "What do we do now?" He asked quietly. "I don't know, I just don't know." Scully answered. She felt terrible. Mulder reminded her of a lost little boy. She wanted to tell him that everything would be OK. But she didn't even know if that was true. "I'm sorry I had to put you through this. You don't deserve it." That was true. All he had done was learn too much and *they* wanted to kill him. It was like being in the Mob. "I guess we better not report to where the kidnapping took place. That would probably be the worst we could do. " She stopped and looked at him. Mulder had regained his composure and appeared to be thinking. "No. We have to go. We just have to be prepared. Who told you to do this? Who? I have to know!" He got up and started pacing. " How do I know if you still aren't out to kill me?" He stopped pacing and stood facing her. "Mulder! I'm not going to kill you! How can I prove-" Scully stopped and moved towards him with her hands up. when she stopped she reached out slowly, cupped his chin in her hand and softly kissed him. "Whatever happens we're in it together, OK? I don't want to lose you." she stepped back. Mulder's mind was in a whirl. So many emotions rushed through him. He believed her. He didn't know what else to think. He stepped towards her and gathered her into his arms. "I believe you Dana. You're the only one I can believe." THE END.
