Rated PG-13 or R(violence, maybe a little foul language)

Legal Disclaimer: the X-Files and all characters from it are the property
of Chris Cater 10-13 productions, and the Fox Network. They would probably
have me castrated if I used this for any monetary gain. However since I'm
a crappy writer, I will never make money off these stories so it's really
no big deal. Also Jack Ryan and any other character from the works of Tom
Clancy belong, of course, to Tom Clancy, a great author with really, really
bad political views.

Summary: A collection of CIA files lead Mulder, Scully and Lincoln to Jack
Ryan. Ryan vows to help. But what will Mulder's enemies do to ensure
Ryan's silence? And will this insurance policy only incite Ryan to further
action against them?

Author's Note: I came up with this idea sorta on my own, I came across a
couple of Jack Ryan/X-File crossovers in the Gossamer Project that I thought
didn't live up to the spirit of Jack Ryan, and lets face it Jack Ryan and
the X-Files
is a wonderful mix. Ryan is such a passionate defender of truth, justice
and the American
way that he would make a powerful ally for the X-Files team, if he believed
them. So hang
on and enjoy the ride. Oh and don't ask about the title, I don't know what
it means I
think I got if from Hunter Thompson's "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign
Trail '72",
sounds cool though doesn't it ;) -sam

X-Phobia 2: Truth Uber Allies, Chapter 1,

Hoover Building 3:00 PM, Day 1
It was a dreary January day in Washington DC. Three months had passed since
Colonel Sam Lincoln had joined the X-file investigation team. Over those
three months they had chased, tracked, and hunted down three flesh-eating
mutants, seven UFOs a man who thought he was the reincarnation of Ghengis Khan
and been trying to organize a horde to sack New York City, and a coven of
politically-correct witches. All in all a pretty run of the mill period for
the group. Scully had come with inches of dying on no less than six
occasions, Mulder had been beaten up six times, and Lincoln so far had not
gotten a scratch on him. During a period of down time while they were working
on finishing up some case files Mulder received a call from one of his
contacts.

"I've got to go." Was all he said as he grabbed his coat and walked out the
door. Lincoln and Scully shrugged to each other and continued working.

Mulder returned roughly an hour later, loaded down with file folders. He
quickly dumped them on his desk and started to read them.

"Well, what have you found this time Mulder?" Lincoln asked.

"Documents detailing CIA covert ops activity over the past twenty years.
I know those bastards have at least some of the answers and that their
probably in these files." He continued to skim them at high speed.

"May I take a look please Mulder. You do remember that until very recently I
had almost complete access to any government document out there. I can
probably tell you whether or not these are accurate."

Mulder nodded, "Okay you can take a look at these ones from 1984." He handed
Lincoln a collection of folders.

Lincoln started to flip through the documents. He was impressed these did
seem to be copies of CIA operations. The code words were all there, and were
the right ones for the period. The events described seemed to be
reasonable. Lincoln wanted to know just who Mulder's source was. The
person had to have an impressive collection method to get hard copies of
these files.

"Well Mulder, I'm impressed these do seem to be genuine. But I still don't
see how knowing what the CIA was up to for the past fifteen years can help
you. I thought I told you that Smith wasn't with the CIA."

"Yeah you told us he was with the Bureau and look were that got us. Strange
looks from the Counter-Espionage Division. Turned out they had never seen
the guy either." Mulder snorted in disgust.

"Hey how was I to know that he had managed to fool the White House's computer
net. I'm willing to bet that these guys aren't even working under the
auspices of the US government anymore." Lincoln countered.

"I just don't buy it were could they get the resources to continue operations
without the aegis of the government."

"Boys, boys, can we continue this discussion later. If we don't get this
paperwork done Skinner's going to be mounting us on his walls right next to
that picture of Janet Reno." Scully stopped the argument and Lincoln and
Mulder started to work on their files again.

White House 4:15 PM, Day 1
Meanwhile in his office in the White House, National Security Advisor John
Patrick Ryan answered his telephone.

"Ryan, what? How long ago? Do you know who took the files? How about where
they ended up? Nothing? Okay I'll have Clark and Ding look into it as well
as pass it along to Dan Murray over at the FBI. I know you'd rather keep it
in the Agency, but we need some help and the Bureau's pretty good at this
stuff. Besides Dan and I go way back, he can keep this thing quiet. No
problem, thank for calling MP." Ryan disconnected the phone and punched in a
new number. "Hello John, it's Jack, yeah good to talk to you too. Listen
there seems to have been a little problem down at Operations storage
facility. They seem to have 'misplaced' copies of the Agencies activities
over the last twenty years. MP says they have no clue as to who took them,
or where they've gone. I want you and Ding to do some digging for me.
Don't worry about jurisdiction I'll ask Dan Murray to deputize you or
something. We can't let those files see print. They're still too
sensitive. Yeah, I know, my name's in those files a lot remember? Okay
thanks a lot I owe you one." Once again he disconnected the line and
dialed another number. "Hello, AD Murray's office this is National
Security Advisor Ryan, is AD Murray available. He is? Great can you tell
him to come see me in about twenty minutes? Wonderful, thank you for your
time." He finally hung up the phone and started to think.

Apt. 42 8:30 PM, Day 1
That night Lincoln was looking through the files in question with Mulder and
Scully in Mulder's apartment when his cell-phone rang. Lincoln entered
Mulder's kitchen so he could talk in private.

"Hello? Oh, hi John, what's up?" he addressed the phone.

"Not much Colonel, how're you, enjoying doing grunt work for the FBI?" John
Clark asked him over the phone.

"It's been interesting to say the least. So what do you want?"

"Well, it seems Mary-Pat's department lost some files and Jack asked me to
help them find the darn things."

"Just what kind of files?" Lincoln asked, gulping quietly.

"They were some operational files. I can't say much more than that, but
suffice to say they were very complete and Jack want's them back before they
can reach the press."

Lincoln sighed, and rapidly made his decision, "Sorry John, I haven't seen any
CIA files. If I do I'll let you know." He could lie with the best of them if
 he had to.

"Okay, well, I'll be seeing you. Ding and I are probably going to be around
the Hoover Building working with counter-espionage trying to trace down those
files. See you Sam."

"Yeah, catch you around." Lincoln sighed as he closed the connection and
walked back into the main room.

"What's wrong Sam?" Scully asked in response to his hang dog look.

"Well, I just lied to a very close friend. And have committed treason to
boot."

"Atta boy Lincoln, way to go!" Mulder grinned.

"Shut up Mulder, I was just called by a very close friend of mine over at the
CIA, John Clark," Mulder whistled appreciatively at Clark's name, "He has been
asked to help the FBI in tracking down these files we're holding in our little
 hands right now."

"Who, if I many ask is John Clark?" Scully had never heard of him.

"John Clark is one the best para-military operatives the CIA has ever had,"
Lincoln answered, cutting of Mulder's less pleasant description, "John has
been to a lot of nasty places over his career, he's an ex-Navy SEAL, he
served in Vietnam. He started working for the CIA after his hitch was up in
the early '70's. Clark has one of the highest success rates of any operative
ever. His name's probably pretty prominent in those files, I know he speaks
fluent Russian, as well as several other Slavic languages. He's probably
better than anyone else in the field."

"That's all true Scully, also he has assassinated a rather large number of
people and he matches the description of one, John Kelly, also an ex-Navy SEAL,
who was wanted in connection with a series of execution-style killings of drug
dealers. The case was never formally closed, Kelly is listed as lost at sea
after a high-speed boat chase with the Coast Guard. Your friend, Mr. Clark,
is a very efficient killer. Also did he mention from where these orders came
from?"

"He said that he got his walking papers from National Security Advisor Ryan.
So no Mulder, this is not the work of our prey, we've just violated federal
laws and Jack wants to keep sensitive data from the public."

"But the public has a right to know this stuff!" Mulder sounded like a
petulant child.

"This information would cause several international incidents, and a couple of
years ago would have lead to a shooting war. It may be in the past but this
stuff can still cause troubles today. Jack understands this and doesn't want
to see that happen."

"Jack, you know the NSA?" Mulder asked.

"Yeah, I meet while I was working with the DIA. He's a good man Mulder."

"I think we should just keep quiet about these and if they come looking for
them, we lie." Mulder said.

"I don't know Mulder, Clark's pretty good at his job. If he can track these
down to us than we could very well be in a world of trouble. I say we go
talk to Jack, tell him the truth, and then see what he says. And maybe try
to get his help in shutting down Smith and his cronies."

"I'd have to go along with Sam on this one Mulder," Scully told her partner,
hating herself for saying it.

"Don't you two get it? This is exactly what they want! I'm not going to give
these up now. Do you know how long I've waited to get my hands on these
things." Mulder was furious.

"Mulder, these files won't have your sister in them. They're all foreign
operations. So far I have found no mention of any sort of work done in the
US. I'm sorry Mulder but the truth your looking for isn't here." Lincoln
patted the bereft FBI agent on the arm. "Hey, buck up, maybe if we go see
Ryan he could help us find some more information about your sister."

Mulder was finally sold, "Okay we leave the files locked in the office vault
and go see Ryan. If he can help us he can get his files back. If not, well,
we'll have to talk about that."

"Great I'll set up an appointment with Jack first thing tomorrow morning." He
left Mulder's place and headed for home.

"Why, Scully do I have the feeling that I'll regret doing this?"

"Oh, Mulder, I feel so bad for you. You've come so close to finding out about
Samantha, yet you've found the wrong thing. But just so you know this is the
right thing you're doing. We shouldn't know half the stuff we've read
tonight. Some of it's more frightening than an X-File. The public doesn't
need to know how close we came to nuclear annihilation. Let's go talk to
Ryan and see what he has to say." Scully anguished over the hurt that was
evident in her partners eyes. She started to rub his back in an effort to
soothe him.

"Scully?"

"Yes, Mulder?"

"Can you stay a while longer, I really don't want to be alone right know."
Mulder was close to crying.

"Sure thing Mulder, sure thing." She continued to rub his back as the two of
them sat on his couch in silence. They stayed that way for several hours...

X-Phobia 2: Truth Uber Allies, Chapter 2

Hoover Building 9:00 AM, Day 2
The next day Lincoln found a rather somber Mulder and Scully absentmindedly
flipping through files, and punching keyboards.

"Well, hello everyone," Lincoln said, "I've already called Ryan and he's
agreed to meet with us as soon as we show up. So if it's okay with you two
why don't we head over now."

"Might as well get it over with," Mulder sighed, "You sure he's not going to
have us shot, and dumped into the Potomac in the dead of night.?"

"Mulder! Ryan would never do anything like that. He is one of the few people
in this country who still believes the government stands for something good
and honorable. It's not a means to an end for him, or a way to exert power
over others. Ryan is there to..."

"Ahhhh shove it Sam, I'm just not in the mood for your sanctimonious crap."
Mulder stalked out of the office.

"I'm sorry Sam, it's just that anytime we get close to finding out about
Samantha something happens to prevent us. And this time I guess he's just
taking it real hard because he thinks we're just giving up without a fight."
Scully looked out the door where her partner had just left.

"I understand Dana, now let's go see Jack and hope he can give us a hand.
Who knows maybe this will lead to finding Mulder's sister after all."

"I hope so Sam, I hope so, I don't know how much longer Mulder can keep
going without some clue either way. And that file you found just wasn't
enough. In many ways it's made it even worse. He now knows that she is
alive, and living in the country somewhere." She sighed as the two of them
walked out of the office.

They caught up to Mulder and headed to the parking garage. By unspoken
consent it was decided to use Lincoln's car, mainly because he had left the
White House parking sticker on the windshield. They pulled up to the gate
and the guard waved them in. Other than having to check their guns with the
security guard at the door they were not hassled. Lincoln lead them to the
office of the National Security Advisor. Lincoln opened the door and
indicated that Mulder and Scully should go in first. When they were all in
Ryan's secretary looked up and said.

"May I help you?"

"Yes we're here to see Advisor Ryan please. If you would just tell him that
Colonel Lincoln is outside."

"Certainly Colonel, I'll see if the Advisor is available." She stood up and
knocked on the door behind her. She opened the door and a muted exchange
quickly took place. She then opened the door wider and said to the group,
"Dr. Ryan will see you know."

Lincoln quickly lead the group into Ryan's office. Mulder finally got his
first good look at ostensibly one of the heads of the group he loathed, the
United States Intelligence Community. Ryan was about Mulder's height, he had
black hair that was starting to gray. Although he was not incredibly handsome
he was not butt ugly either. Scully thought he looked somewhat like Mulder
would in about ten to fifteen years.

"Hmmmm, I could get used to waking up to that," She thought to herself, "Where
did that thought come from!" she wondered.

"Sam, nice to see you again." Ryan stood up from his chair and walked over to
 Lincoln and shook his hand.

"Nice to see you again too Jack," Lincoln smiled warmly.

"You must be Agent Mulder. I've heard a lot about you," Mulder only
grudgingly shook Ryan's hand.

"Hopefully it was something flattering sir," Mulder managed to joke.

"And you must be Agent Scully. It's a pleasure to meet you." He also shook
Scully's hand.

"Likewise sir," she replied.

"Now that we've gotten the introductions out of the way we can get started,"
Lincoln said, "And you'd better sit down cause you aren't going to like what
you're about to hear." After Ryan re-seated himself Lincoln launched into
the story about the files.

Ryan was not pleased with what he heard, "You did what Sam!!"

"I told Clark I had no idea where those files were when they were sitting in
the same room I was." Lincoln replied evenly.

"But why? That's treason."

"Simple, at the time I had no idea what was in those files. Jack, I'll be
perfectly honest *I* don't know what's going on. I went into this thing
convinced that Mulder was paranoid, now, I'm not so sure. I'm getting the
vaguest outlines of some group operating outside the boarders of the
government, but close enough that it had to have been a government run
operation at some point in time. At any rate I didn't know what was in those
files, they could have contained some of the answers I, we, were looking for.
As it turns out I was wrong, and I'm now coming, hat in my hands begging
forgiveness. We're willing to turn them back over to you, if you agree not
to press charges."

Ryan thought about it for a few moments before replying, "Deal, I'll tell
Clark that you got them shortly after he called and that you told me directly
because you knew how important this was. I don't hold this against you Sam,
but I fail to see how you of all people could think that this stuff is true."

"Now, wait a minute" Mulder couldn't take anymore, "Let me tell you something
mister. These people are real! They took my sister, killed my father, shot
Scully's sister, and abducted Scully. They've been hiding the truth for so
long that I think even they believe the lies they're telling know. Never the
less they'll stop at nothing to keep people from finding the truth!"

"Mr. Mulder! Would please get to the point." Ryan cut of Mulder's diatribe.

"My point is sir. I want some answers in return for these files."

"Are you blackmailing me Mr. Mulder." Ryan's body was shaking with barely
contained rage.

"Uh, oh. Ryan seems to more of an Irish temper than I do," Scully thought to
herself. "Better break this up before they start throwing punches," Scully
sighed and stood up, "OK children knock it off! Mulder, we're going to give
Dr. Ryan his files back. Dr. Ryan you will try to find some information
regarding the location of Mulder's sister, Samantha." The look Scully gave
Ryan and Mulder made both of them look at their shoes with great interest.
Lincoln did his best to keep from laughing.

"Your right Agent Scully, I'll be more than willing to try and find out
something that could help you. If what your saying is true than someone
needs to be held accountable and I'll try to find that someone."

"What would you know about accountable. Your the one who's suppressing the
knowledge in those CIA files." Mulder's disdain was clearly evident.

"For your information Agent Mulder. The last time I found out that this
government was engaging in a quasi-legal activity I shut it down and made sure
the guys we left behind were taken care of." Ryan's voice was like ice.

"South America Jack?" Lincoln asked, Ryan only nodded.

"Clark told me some of what happened there, bad situation."

"That's enough Colonel, these are uncleared civilians." Ryan cautioned.

Lincoln suffered from another coughing fit, "Jack, do you know how much these
two have seen?" He said. "They have probably looked at as many code-word
classified documents as I have, and I'm not talking about these stinking
files."

"Is he telling the truth?" Ryan asked, "Have you two been looking at
classified documents illegally?"

"Well, I wouldn't call it legal, but I wouldn't say illegal either." Mulder
drawled, "You see, yes I have seen a lot of classified government documents,
but only ones that are twenty years old, and none that had anything to do with
the Soviet Union, or any military technological developments."

"Well, what's done is what's done I guess. Tell you what, I'll agree to your
terms. If you give me back those files I won't prosecute, I'll tell Clark and
AD Murray that they can stop their search. I'll say that one of your
informants gave them to you Mr. Mulder and that you turned them over to
Colonel Lincoln who, in turn, gave them to me. And, in return, I will go and
try to find some information that will help you three in your search. How
does that sound?"

"Thank you very much Dr. Ryan. This means a lot to us." Scully smiled warmly
at him.

"You'd get a long very well with my wife Ms. Scully..."

"First off, it's Dr. Scully now, and secondly call me Dana."

"Well, another thing you and my wife have in common, tell me is it an MD,
Dana?"

"Yes, I'm a forensic pathologist."

Ryan made a face, "Well, my wife's a pretty good eyecutter. Look, I'll have
Clark pick up those files from you sometime today. Why don't you three stop
by me house tonight for supper. Cathy'll hate the surprise but I can grill
up something pretty quickly. I'll probably have something for you by then."

"That sounds wonderful Jack. Thanks for your help." They stood up to leave.

"Thank you for your time Dr. Ryan." Scully said.

"Don't mention it Dana."

Mulder mumbled something unintelligible.

"I think that's as close to a thank-you as I'm going to get from you Agent
Mulder so, your welcome. Just so you know you've done the right thing for
your country."

After the group left Ryan called his secretary and told her to cancel the
rest of his appointments. He then left his office and headed over to the CIA
archives.

-somewhere else 10:00 AM Day 2.

The room was dark, and smoke filled. A phone rang and the man Lincoln knew
as John Smith picked up the phone.

"Hello, yes. They've done what? He's where? Well, we did foresee a
possibility of this happening. Institute the Swordsman Protocols immediately.
I'll go have a talk with our Swordsman when they go into effect." He hung up
the phone and took a long drag on his cigarette. He then looked reflectively
at the large cloud of smoke he breathed out, looking for the answers.

-Peregrine Hill, MD 5:00 PM. Day 2

Dinnertime was settling in on the Ryan household. Dr. Cathy Ryan had dinner
duty tonight so she had come home a little earlier. She was bustling in
the kitchen when a powerful bright light stabbed it's way through the
window. Blinded by it she only barely saw a figure loom out of the glare.
She thought she heard a "pfft" sound, and then all was dark...
-White House 5:30 PM, Day 2

Ryan returned from the CIA archives after unsuccessfully finding anything.
When he entered his nose twitched, someone was smoking. Since Ryan was
currently free of that vice it meant that someone else was in his office,
someone who was violating the White House no-smoking policy.

"Whose there?" He asked.

"Only me Dr. Ryan." The craggy visage of "John Smith" stepped out of the
shadows in Ryan's office.

"Who the hell are you and why are you in my office?" Ryan demanded.

"Dr. Ryan, you have been poking your nose in places it doesn't belong, and to
insure that you no longer meddle in our affairs measure have been taken to
make sure you remember this fact."

"What are you talking about? You bastard I don't take threats well."

"I suggest you call home Dr. Ryan and make sure you family is well."

Ryan's temper snapped, he grabbed "Smith" and slammed him into the wall, "If
you have harmed anyone of my family I swear to God nothing can protect you. I
will personally hunt you down and kill you with my bare hands!" Ryan snarled.

"I assure you no harm will come to your precious family so long as you no
longer involve yourself with the X-Files."

"I never deal with bullies..." Ryan was cut off by his phone ringing. Ryan
dropped "Smith" and answered it, "Ryan, yes, when, who, all right I'll be
there immediately," Ryan shot daggers at "Smith", "I suggest you leave
immediately before I really lose my temper." "Smith" smiled evily and left,
Ryan hung up the phone and then dialed a new number, "Hello Mr. President,
It's Ryan, yes, look something happened at my house and I need to get their
immediately, can I borrow Marine One or Two. Thank you Mr. President, I'll
have them come right back." Ryan hung up the phone and ran out his office,
coat forgotten...

X-Phobia 2: Truth Uber Allies, Chapter 3

Peregrine Hill MD 6:00 PM, Day 2

When Lincoln, Mulder, and Scully pulled up to the Ryan household they knew
something was wrong. Police cars were all over the place as well as the more
non-descript cars of the FBI. They were stopped by a police officer when the
came up to the door, Mulder and Scully quickly flashed him their badges and
they were admitted into the house. Lincoln walked into the Ryan's living room
to find Dan Murray talking to a visibly distraught Cathy Ryan, Jack Ryan was
a study in carefully contained rage.

"Jack! What's happened?" Lincoln asked.

"Huh? Sam, What're you doing here?" Ryan asked disorientedly.

"Remember you invited us to dinner."

"OH, yeah that's right. Well, a couple hours after you three left my office
I was visited by some man and he told me to butt out of his affairs. While he
was there I got this call to come home. When I did I found out that Cathy had
been attacked and that someone had taken Katie."

"Just one question Dr. Ryan, was this man smoking?" Mulder asked as he walked
into the room.

"Yes, yes he was."

"Damn him! He's done it again!" Mulder exclaimed.

"Excuse me," Murray broke in, "Agent Mulder isn't it?" Mulder nodded, "What do
you know about this man, is he some sort of serial kidnapper?"

"No sir, he's a member of the "conspiracy" that has been..." Mulder quickly
gave the tired spiel.

"Well, no wonder Walt's stuck you down in the basement. I find that story
very hard to believe," Murray told the agents, "But it's the only lead we have
to go on. Do you have any idea where we can find this man?"

"None sir."

"Well, I'll put out an APB for anyone matching his description. Maybe if we
pick him up and rough him up a bit he'll tell us where Katie is. Until then,
I have to get back to the office and get more agents in on this. Agents
Mulder and Scully if you'd like I can have you assigned to this case."

"Yes sir we'd appreciate that," Scully replied quickly.

"I'll talk to Walt in the morning then, Good night Jack. Don't worry we'll
get your son back." Murray walked out of the room and left the house.

"Now, Dr. Ryan, if you'd please tell us everything you remember about the
incident," Mulder asked Cathy.

"Please, call me Cathy, things could start to get pretty confusing if keep
saying Dr. Ryan," she smiled weakly, "Well, I was making lunch for the kids
when all of a sudden this blinding white light shone into the room. I turned
around and saw this figure in the light. Then...I can't remember anything
else until I woke up and found Katie gone."

"Thank you, Cathy, Do you mind if we have a look around the house?" Mulder
asked.

"Go ahead, every conceivable person already has but maybe you'll be able to
find something else."

Mulder, Scully, and Lincoln quickly began looking over the kitchen and
playroom, hunting for anything that the kidnappers might have left behind.

"Okay Mulder spill it you think the Ryan kid was abducted don't you?" Scully
accused her partner.

"Believe me that thought has crossed my mind, but where does the Cancer Man fit
into all of it. Did he set up the abduction, or did he fake one?"

"Hey, you two check this out," Lincoln's voice came from the kitchen. When
Mulder and Scully reached him he was standing at the stove, the attempt at
lunch still sitting there.

"What is it Sam?" Scully asked.

"I think I know how they did it. Look, right behind me is a bay window
looking out over the Chesapeake right?" The nodded, "Well, there's a big
cliff at the end of the property, a decent enough pilot could fly at wave-top
level then pop up, flash a spot on the room while deploying an assault team
and you'd never know it standing here."

"Sounds good to me, but wouldn't she notice the noise?"

"Not if you used a chopper with a baffled tail rotor, that's where the noise
comes from after all the interference of the two frequencies. A chopper with
a baffled tail rotor is incredibly quiet, one of the advantages of the new
Commanche's, but I digress. Let's go take a look outside and see if there
are any wheel or skid marks, or maybe a flattened pattern in the snow from the
down-blast of the main rotor."

They quickly grabbed flashlights to ward off the oncoming darkness and
started looking.

"Now please explain to me why all of the other trained professional
investigators wouldn't have found this?" Mulder asked, shivering slightly in
the crisp winter night.

"Call it a hunch, tell me do you think they took that bright light claim
seriously? How about you Dana?" Lincoln queried.

"Well, I'll admit it could have been from a blow to the head. She did look
pretty out of it, but I didn't get a chance to perform a physical on her."
Scully conceded.

"Ah-ha!!, Check this out, footprints." Lincoln exclaimed excitedly.

"Where?" Mulder couldn't see any.

"Here, right next to the cliff, I think I know how they did it. Incredible,
that was clever." The admiration was evident in Lincoln's voice.

"How?"

"Well, they came in low, under the cliff, touched down at the cliff's base,
scaled the cliff. Then they approached the house. The chopper unmasked once
the team was in place and flashed spot at the house. I'd guess that they had
figured out where Cathy was before they signaled the chopper. Then they
immobilized Cathy, grabbed the kid, used a drag-line to wipe out the footprints
and had the chopper hover at the cliff's edge when the reloaded. Nice work."

"But how, then, did you find the footprints?" Mulder asked.

"Dunno, Mulder, my guess would be they got a little sloppy and didn't use the
drag line when they were boarding or getting off the cliff face. The fact
that they manage to climb the thing without a ladder is pretty impressive,
these are pretty crumbly rocks." He examined a little more carefully, "Just
like I thought, check it out, these marks are consistent with the hooks on a
grapple-thrower. Thought it still took a lot of cajones to climb this thing.
Well, there's my theory. Anyone else have anything to add?"

"I think your explanation will suffice. Now all we need is a playback of the
air traffic control radar logs for tonight and we might be able to find our
helicopter. Plus we have to tell AD Murray what we've found. Then we look
at Dr. Ryan's medical results. But most importantly we have to find "Smith",
if we can find him then we've found Ryan's kid. He's the key." Mulder ran
through the list quickly.

"Mulder I'm impressed you aren't pushing the aliens in this case. I would
have been positive you would have given Dr. Ryan's testimony." Scully said.

"Well, Scully normally I would but Ryan's encounter with "Smith" minutes after
the abduction leads me to believe otherwise. I think that the whole abduction
angle is just to throw us off their trail. To goad me into doing something
stupid, making a fool of myself and throwing the whole investigation off
track."

"Your probably right Mulder, for once your thinking logically, now can we go
back into the house now I'm getting cold." Scully said, teeth chattering.

"Of course, Dana, there's really nothing to see here." Lincoln offered
Scully his arm and she took it, Lincoln gave Mulder a very large smirk.
Mulder grumbled and followed the two back into the house.

Once inside they were accosted by Ryan, "Well, did you find anything?"

"Jack I think I found evidence that a military-style group kidnapped Katie.
They seem to have used a helicopter to get in, climbed that cliff behind your
house. Immobilized Cathy and the kids and absconded with Katie." Lincoln gave
Ryan his hypothesis.

"Well, that convinces me that that "Smith" character did it. I'm going to
nail that bastard for this. What help do you three need in getting him? No
one threatens my family, no one!" Ryan was still in a rage.

"We're going to need access to all of the appropriations of the various
intelligence agencies for the past oh, twenty years." Mulder said quickly,
"And I'm not talking about the ones that are submitted to Congress. I mean
the internal ones. These guys have to have been using federal money to finance
their goals and the intelligence agencies are the easiest way to get large
sums of cash with no questions. That and the military."

"That's not going to be easy Agent Mulder, I can get the information, but I'm
sure that "Smith" will be watching to see if I send you any information. How
about I have an intermediary do all the work. He can locate any suspicious
requests then pass them over to you." Ryan had quickly approved the plan.

"Perfect, Jack, I'm assuming you're going to ask Clark to do this?"

"Yes, he's done something like this before and he knows when he's being
watched. In fact I'm going to call him right now and have him get to work
immediately." Ryan walked over to a seldom used phone and punched in a number,
"Hi John, it's Jack, listen I need you to go over to the Pentagon and do a
little research for me..."Ryan quickly informed Clark of the night's events
and told him his part of the plan, "Thanks a lot John, I really owe you one
now." Ryan hung up the phone. "Well, he's agreed and we should have some
preliminary results tomorrow morning. Why don't you three head for home. We
have to get packed up and leave. The president's offered us the use of Camp
David for the duration of this. It should be the safest place for the family.
Marine One should be picking us up soon."

"OK, see you tomorrow Jack." Lincoln said as he left the house, Scully
followed him out.

As Mulder was leaving he turned and asked Ryan, "Sir, just what are you
planning to tell the media about this?"

"I haven't thought about it much Agent Mulder why?"

"Well, my advice is to make this as public as possible. Appear on all the
news shows, talk shows, call in shows, and whatever other kind of show you
can. Start making appeals for the kidnappers to return your daughter. These
guys we're after live in the shadows. Start making the shadows a little
smaller by throwing massive amounts of attention on this. I know it might be
painful for you but it will help immensely to getting you daughter back."

"Thank-you for the advice Agent Mulder. I'll take it under advisement." Ryan
offered Mulder his hand in thanks and this time Mulder shook it without
hesitation.

Day 5-Somewhere

"John Smith" watched his tiny TV and angrily stubbed out another cigarette.
For the past three days Ryan hand kept up an intense mass-media presence.
Spots on national news programs, hastily rescheduled guest appearances on
late night talk shows, even advertisements, paid out of Ryan's own pocket,
on prime-time television. All of them featured either Ryan or his wife
begging their daughter's kidnappers to return her. "Smith" snorted, his
advisors had all agreed that Ryan wouldn't pull a stunt like this, he was
career CIA man who was supposed to stay in the shadows and keep the
investigation quiet.

"Well, we certainly wrong about that weren't we. I should have remembered
that incident with the ULA." He thought to himself as he lit another
Morley. Ryan was a Boy Scout, and the thing he held dearest to him was his
family. That was known, what they couldn't have known was that Ryan would
lash out at them instead of retreating inward.

"Oh well, it's still just a matter of time before the cattle loses interest
with one man's desperate cries for help and then Ryan will no longer be a
threat," consoled he puffed away on his cancer-bomb.

Hoover Building, X-File Division, 9:00 AM

Mulder paced in front of a map of the state of Maryland, "It's got to be
around here somewhere," He muttered, "It has to be!"

"Mulder slow down, your wearing a hole in the linoleum," Scully chided,
"and when was the last time you slept, you look like shit."

"Hi guys I've got the first wave of data from Clark." Lincoln said as he
entered the room.

Mulder and Scully had been assigned to work on finding Katie Ryan through
"unorthodox channels" while another group of agents used standard FBI
operating procedures for kidnapping investigations. So far neither group
had managed to turn up any information. That had hopefully changed with
the arrival of the first batch of unexplainable acquisitions by either the
CIA, the defense department, the DOE, or the Department of Justice.

"We'll we'd better start looking through this stuff. The rest of it will
be sent by courier when Clark has it prepped." Lincoln handed each of them
a stack of papers, "Dig in."

X-Phobia 2: Truth Uber Alllies, Chapter 4
9:00 PM

After twelve hours they were still no closer to finding Katie Ryan than
they were before. Scully and Lincoln had both dropped at their desks while
Mulder continued to search...

Day 6, 12:00

Scully awoke and stretched her very sore body. She saw her partner face
down in a folder. Smiling softly she smoothed his tousled hair and looked
at what he was reading. She gasped when she realized what it was, a
warehouse, on the outskirts of Baltimore, and nothing had ever been stored
there.

"Bingo," she thought to herself, sighing she roused Mulder, "Hey Mulder
wake up, you found it."

"Huh? Found wha... Oh! I did?" Mulder snorted as his cognitive functions
kicked in.

"You found where their holding the Ryan kid." She showed him the
information he had been using for a pillow.

"Oh, truthfully I fell asleep before I had even looked at that page. But
your right Scully, this is the place. We'd better wake up Sleeping Beauty
over their and call Murray to let him know where we're going."

"What do you mean we Mulder."

"We're going after that kid now. We'll need the element of surprise to
make sure those bastards don't bolt out of their, destroying the place
behind them, and move her to a harder place to find."

"Move who?" A new voice asked.

Mulder and Scully turned and saw John Clark's large build looming in the
door frame.

"Mr. Clark I presume?" Mulder knew he had to trust the man, but didn't
like having to do so.

"That's my name," Clark smiled inwardly at the irony of the statement,
"And you must be Agent Mulder and Agent Scully," He walked over and shook
hands with both of the two agents, "It's a pleasure to meet you. What'd you
do to the Colonel?" He nodded at the prone form of Lincoln.

"Couldn't keep up with us I guess," Scully said smiling, Clark made her
feel a little nervous but she did like him, after all he was an old sea
dog.

"To get back to the topic on hand, am I to take it that you two think
you've found Katie?"

"We think so. We've located a warehouse on the outskirts of Baltimore that
was acquired by the Department of Energy about five years ago for document
storage, the thing is they've never stored a single thing in there..."

Clark finished the thought for Mulder. "Just the place we're looking for
right?"

Mulder nodded, "Correct, plus it's near a small, local airport. Perfect spot."

"Okay, when do we go in and get Katie?"

"What do you mean we Mr. Clark? Last I heard you weren't a member of the FBI."

"Mr. Mulder I'm going along for two reasons. One, I know my way around a
fire fight and your going to need all the help you can get. Two, I'm damn
good friends with Jack Ryan, I know Katie Ryan, this is personal. I'm
going to help make sure those bastards go down for threatening a child."
The ice in Clark's eyes and the total calm in his voice made Mulder back
off.

"We'll be glad to get you a Sig or something from the armory. We're going
to have to go down their any ways for some body armor."

"Awww, Scully, but it chafes me so." Mulder said in his best little boy voice.

"Tough Mulder I can always rub some lotion on you afterwards. I always
prefer that to stitching you back together again."

"Well then, I think I have a rash right now. Care to rub some lotion on me
now?" Mulder asked hopefully.

"Grow up Mulder." Scully huffed at her partner who had a bemused twinkle
in his eyes.

"Now that you two are done harassing each other can we get back to work
please?" Clark really wasn't upset at the two's banter, if you could joke
during a high-stress situation you would usually live. Also if partners
got along as well as these two did then they would again have a very high
survival rate. Clark knew he had run the number himself for a CIA field
study. "Now why don't we wake the Colonel and get a move on. While your
doing that I'll go call Jack and let him know what's up. He told me to
call him as soon as we had anything. He'll probably want to come along."

"No way! There is no way I'm letting a civilian come along with us. Much
less the National Security Advisor." Mulder thought he was being as
forceful as he could.

"But you forget Agent Mulder. Jack Ryan has been in quite a few fire
fights in his time. I don't really want him tagging along but if he makes
an order out of it I'm not stopping him. Now is there someplace I can call
him in private?" Mulder threw Clark his cell phone. "Thanks I'll be right
back." Clark wandered out of the room.

"We'd better wake him up. Scully, would care to do the honors?"

"I'd be delighted." Scully walked over to Lincoln's little corner of the
room, an earth shattering snore came from Lincoln's inert form as she bent
over him. "Gross, he drooled on these papers!" She straitened and picked
up a large dictionary lying on his desk. She then slammed the book down
hard on the desk top.

"Huh?, Whazzat? One of the dogs knock something over?" Lincoln's head
shoot up and he groggily looked around, "Nutin, I'm going back to sleep."
Like an automaton his head fell down onto his desk.

Sighing Scully bent over and whispered something into Lincoln's ear. He
was immediately awake. Lincoln stood up, looked around a little bewildered
then shot Scully a sly smile. Mulder was boggled by the interchange.

"So, what's up?" Lincoln said as he rubbed his eyes.

"Well, we found where there holding Katie Ryan..." Mulder started to spin
his tale.

"Let me guess abandoned warehouse?"

"Well, yeah. How'd you know"

"Simple with you people it's always an abandoned warehouse or factory."
Lincoln grinned.

"Yeah, well fates funny that way Lincoln. Now come on let's get ready to
go. I have to call AD Murray and Scully needs to get Clark a gun." Mulder
picked up his phone and started to dial.

"Clarks here?"

"Yeah, he showed up a couple of minutes ago. He's calling Ryan right now
to tell him what we've found." Scully filled Lincoln in on the whole story
while Mulder talked on the phone.

As Mulder was hanging up the phone Clark walked back into the room.
"Thanks for the phone," He handed Mulder his cell-phone, "Ryan said not to
do anything until he showed up. He was in his office and will be here in a
couple of minutes."

"Okay well get him a gun and a vest as well. Well, what did Murray have to
say?"

"Not much Scully, he's getting a Hostage Rescue Team prepped but they won't
be ready for at least another hour so he agreed that we should go ahead and
check it out."

"Does that mean we're authorized to go in?" Scully wanted this assault to
be at least half way legal.

"He said he'd have a magistrates signature on a warrant by the time we were
ready to go and that it'll be in our hands then." Mulder said wryly, "Like
that would stop us any ways."

"Never has in the past Mulder." Scully sighed, "Well, come on you two lets
get some vests and guns." They left for the armory. Once there they got
four of the FBI's toughest bullet-proof vest and some big 'FBI' decals for
Lincoln's Ranger Tactical Vest, "I've got the best why shouldn't I use it?"
was Lincoln's reply to the argument against his using it. Clark got an
MP-5, submachine gun to go along with the 9 mm Sig automatic pistol they
gave him. Lincoln whispered to Clark, "I have silencers for both those
things," Clark nodded. Mulder and Scully also had both Lincoln and Clark
deputized as US Marshals so they could legally make arrests, and to keep
possible media fall-out to a minimum. They also made sure that they had
enough ammo and several spare pistols for Mulder. Mulder and Scully also
took an MP-5's. Lincoln grabbed a heavy M-16 assault rifle and got his .45
Colt from his car. While they were loading up a government issue Suburban,
Ryan pulled up in his battered Volkswagen.

"Good, you haven't left yet," Ryan said, stripping off his jacket to reveal
a holstered Browning 9 mm pistol, "Hello Agents Mulder, Scully, Sam, and
John. Let's go get my daughter."

Lincoln tossed Ryan one of the vests, "Put that on Jack and listen up.
Okay here's the deal. I want a plan of action before we get there. My
suggestion is rolling this puppy through any possible exterior defenses and
then do a standard sweep through the building. I'd expect armed
resistance, Clark, why don't we drop you off behind the place and you get
in through the back way, raise a little trouble the only way you know how
to?"

Clark nodded, "I'll get the bastards for you," Clark checked the clip in
the MP-5 and racked a round into the chamber.

"Well, then remember, It's all about the Vision!" he pointed to his eyes.

"Uhhh, Sam? What does that mean?" Scully asked.

"Truthfully Dana, I have no clue, sounds cool though doesn't it?" Lincoln
grinned, "Let's mount up and get it on!" He hopped onto the running board
of the Suburban and pounded on the roof. Sighing Mulder got in the
passengers side, the rest of the group followed and the black vehicle
lumbered out of the parking structure. At the gate they were handed their
warrant by the attendant.

"Here you go sir."

"Thank you my good man. I'm much obliged." Lincoln rolled up his window
and steered the large four-by-four towards Baltimore...

X-Phobia 2: Truth Uber Allies, Chapter 5

Day 6 1:30 AM Baltimore

It had taken them and hour to find the warehouse. Lincoln dropped Clark
off about a block behind the building as planned. Then he piloted the
heavy truck to the other side of the edifice.

"Well, what do you think Mulder. This the place?"

"It's has to be. Why else would there be the barbed wire? All of the
surveillance cameras? Or, for that matter the armed guards." Mulder said
quietly as they watched the activity around the site.

"How do you want to go in? Fast or slow?"

"We go in fast and hard. Take the bastards down and get my daughter back."
Ryan growled as he checked the clip on his Browning, "Haven't used this
gun seriously in over ten years, never thought I'd have to either."

"Scully, Mulder are you two in agreement, we go in fast?"

"Yes, lets get em." Scully said harshly.

"Okay then, hang on everybody cause we're going in." With that Lincoln
stepped on the accelerator and steered towards the gate surrounding the
compound. With a horrendous shriek of metal the tough Suburban crashed
through the gate and head off to the main entrance.

"Surrender, this is the FBI, give up the girl and no one gets hurt."
Mulder had turned on the loudspeaker that was attached to the car. The
sound of gunfire was the only reply. Lincoln deftly sung the large car to
a stop right in front of the main door. He quickly got out and started to
lay down a cover fire for the rest of the group.

"Get in the building I'll hold them off here!"

"Right, come on let's go!" Mulder bashed down the front door and dove into
the facility. He was greeted by gunfire, Mulder rolled and came up
shooting. The gunfire stopped temporarily and Ryan and Scully entered the
building as well. Lincoln continued to spray the courtyard with his rifle
and backed into the building following the rest of the group.

Lincoln dove as a hail of bullets greeted his entrance, "Okay, how we
doing?" He asked when he caught up with them. They were pinned down behind
a collection of overturned desks. Lincoln stood up and sprayed 5.56 mm
bullets at the shooter and the man went down in a spray of red

"We're fine," Ryan ducked as a bullet singed past him. "We've got to find
Katie quickly we don't want her caught in the crossfire, Lincoln nodded in
agreement.

"Hey Mulder, Scully!" Lincoln roared over the gunfire, "let's split up, you
two go that way," he indicated a corridor in front of them, "Ryan and I'll
go up those stairs." Mulder nodded and motioned for Scully to run. Mulder
stood up and laid down a suppression fire for his partner. Scully, for her
part, laid low several guards as she ran towards the corridor Lincoln had
indicated. Lincoln also took out a couple more guards as he and Ryan ran
to the stair case.

"What I wouldn't do for a concussion grenade right now." Lincoln grunted
as they were stopped by another group of armed men at the head of the
stairs.

"Too risky, we might take out Katie in the process." Ryan gripped the
checked rubber handle of his automatic tighter. He really was getting too
old to be running around in the middle of a ferocious gunfight. Memories
of the missile bay of the Red October, that day in London, South America,
and most clearly, his own home flooded through his mind unbidden. Stamping
down the thought Ryan dove through the door, emptying his clip. To his
relief he escaped with only a couple of wings, his opponent however fell
clutching the remains of his throat. Ryan stood up and slammed another
clip into his gun. Lincoln charged through the door, a fresh clip in his
rifle as well, and motioned for Ryan to continue down the hall.

"Shit, get down Scully!" Bullets ripped past Mulder and Scully as they
tried to examine the hallway they were exploring. Mulder fired off a quick
burst blindly hoping to hit their opponent. His fire was answered with
more gunfire from down the hall.

"This isn't working Mulder," Scully said as she rolled into the center of
the hall and snapped off two quick bursts.

"Scully!!!" Mulder screamed before realizing that the hall was quiet.
Looking he saw Scully standing up and the two gunmen face down in expanding
puddles of red. "Nice shootin Tex," was his only remark to his partner as
he headed off down the hall again.

Clark heard the shooting just as he came up from the sewers. Cursing
slightly he unslung the silenced MP-5 and looked for a target to take down.
He saw several men racing towards the front of the compound. Sighting
them carefully he took aim and dropped them quickly. Sighing a little he
went off in search of the back door.

Lincoln continued to race down the hallway he and Ryan were in. So far
they had yet to find Katie but had found a lot of men. Lincoln grimaced a
little at the pain in one of his arms. He had taken several bullets, most
of them his vest had stopped, but one had gone through his arm. He had
gotten lucky, their was a lot of stuff that could break in the arm and
nothing had. It had really been a graze, but it hurt like the dickens and
he had lost a good amount of blood. A sound beside made him turn and raise
his weapon. He stopped when he saw that it was Mulder and Scully.

"Don't shoot we're friendly!" Scully said.

"Hey, I know that you two. Find anything yet?"

"No, and what happened to your arm?"

"Oh, not much just a little graze," Scully grabbed the first aid kit she
had been carrying and quickly bandaged the wound, "Thanks Dana."

"Any time Sam. Just be sure to pay your bill."

"Don't I always. Look, we might as well just stick together I take it you
covered the majority of the ground floor?" Lincoln quickly slipped back
into his commander role.

"Yeah, didn't see much of interest, although I did grab some computer
diskettes." Mulder smiled wearily, "We might find something of use on them
later. But now sign of the kid."

"Okay then I'm willing to bet she's down this hall, let's get a move on."
The foursome quickly collected their stuff and headed down the new hallway.

Clark had found a way into the building and was quickly mopping up after
the main group. Moving silently he carefully went over every square inch
of the building. Smiling he found a hidden trap door in one of the floor
of one room. Opening it he quickly hopped down and started to investigate.
The basement wasn't much different from the rest of the building. Clark
stopped to drop a couple of guards who got in his way and continued to race
through the basement. He stopped at the doors of what was obviously a
laboratory. Trying the door handle he found it locked. A quick shot from
his pistol proved to be an effective lock pick. Inside he found all sorts
of strange equipment that made his skin crawl. He hastily searched the
room but found no sign of Katie Ryan. Knowing that Mulder might find the
room valuable he grabbed all of the disks and printouts he could before
opening fire on the room with his submachine gun. He didn't know why, he
just knew that the contents of this room were evil.

On the top floor the group ran into a fresh batch of resistance. They were
quickly dispatched and Lincoln charged ahead. Stopping in front of a door
he glanced in through the window set into it. "Jack! Here she is!" he
waved excitedly. Ryan ran up and broke the door down. They found
themselves in a white lab with Ryan's daughter tied up in one corner of the
room. The room had several white-clad technicians quickly gathering up
data to take with them as they tried to escape the melee.

"Freeze! FBI! Throw down your weapons and put your hands up!" Mulder said
when he entered the room. All of the technicians looked at each other,
shrugged then pulled out weapons, and fired at the group at the door.

"Shit!" Lincoln exclaimed as he dove behind a lab counter. Mulder and
Scully followed suit and started to return fire. Ryan slunk towards his
daughter to get her out of the dangerous situation. Lincoln, sensing that
they could be in trouble stood up and strafed the defenders with the last
clip for his rifle. Silence fell as the bodies fell. Ryan untied his
daughter and hugged her tight.

"It's okay Katie, Daddy's here." Tears ran down Ryan's cheeks as he held
his daughter for dear life.

"Hey, Jack we gotta get out of here, they might be calling in
reinforcements." Lincoln gently reminded his friend. Nodding Ryan stood
up cradling his daughter in his arms and they headed for the exit.

As they raced for the exit they were meet by Clark. "Good you've found
her. I think the buildings clear but more might be coming. You four all
right?"

"We're as fine as we can be John. How about you?" Lincoln replied as they
raced out of the warehouse.

"I'm doing okay, although I think I'm officially too old for this kind of
shit." Lincoln laughed at Clark's statement.

When they exited the warehouse they found the building surrounded by lights
and large vehicles. Black-clad FBI agents quickly ran to meet the group
and escorted them outside the fence. They could hear the dwindling sound
of gunfire as the FBI's reinforcements subdued the rest of the warehouse's
inhabitants. They walked towards the command post and were greeted by the
glare of TV camera lights. They news vultures were hustled away by more
agents and the group entered a waiting ambulance. They were greeted inside
by Skinner and Murray as well as the paramedics.

"Well, I see you found our kidnap victim good work people," Skinner said,
"We're going to take you to Bethesda, unless you have another choice."

"Can you get us choppered over to John Hopkins, my wife is a doctor for
them and Katie's records are there as well." Ryan more or less ordered.

Skinner nodded, "We figured you ask that, We'll have a chopper standing by
at the local hospital, won't be more than 10 minutes to get you there."
The sirens of the ambulance were the only sound for the rest of the trip to
the hospital. Upon arriving they went strait to the roof of the building
were the helopad was. A large military med-evac chopper waited for them
and they were helped on board. Skinner and Murray also got onboard.

"The Director is overseeing the rest of the operation personally so he told
us to watch after the six of you," Murray explained, "Don't worry Jack,
we've already called Cathy, and she'll probably beat us to Hopkins." Ryan
smiled tiredly as he stroked his daughter's hair the helicopter flew off
into the night.

When they arrived at the hospital the group was quickly whisked away by
doctors and taken to the emergency room to be examined. None of the
injuries were terribly serious, but they did require medical attention and
blood transfusions. They were all put into recovery rooms and forced to
spend the night under observation. The group really didn't care and they
were all quickly asleep.

X-Phobia 2: Truth Uber Allies, Chapter 6

Day 6 11:00 AM

Dana Scully awoke to find Mulder sitting by her bed punching keys on a
laptop computer. "Something interesting Mulder?"

"Good, your up. Yeah, it's a bunch of records of what was going on in
those labs. I think we have them by the shorthairs now!" He grinned.

"Very descriptive Mulder, but I think your going to have to give them up
again, after we look through them of course." She hastily amended.

"Why? We have no reason to."

"Yes, we do, Ryan's family they need protection the contents of those
floppies will provide that protection. If not, well, this could happen
again. And next time we might not get so lucky."

"Your right, as usual, I'll give these to Ryan and tell him to keep them
some place very safe." Mulder stood up slowly to leave. Scully sat up and
touched his arm lightly.

"Hey, Mulder you're doing the right thing." She said softly.

"I know, I don't want anyone else to go through what my family did when
Samantha was taken and if this can prevent that, well we've won something.
Haven't we?"

Scully smiled at her partner and replied in almost a whisper, "Yes, yes we
have." Mulder returned the smile and left the room.

Mulder walked down the hall and knocked politely onto the door of Ryan's
room. "Come in," Ryan's voice carried into the hall. Mulder opened the
door and entered the room. Inside he found not only Ryan and his youngest
daughter, but his wife, Cathy.

"Ummm, Ad..."

"Agent Mulder, please call me Jack."

"Okay, umm, Jack, I think these belong in your possession." He handed Ryan
the bag that Clark had filled with disks and paper, "It's a log of what
went on at the place. I figured you could use a little influence against
"Smith" and his goons. Just be sure to keep it in a safe place."

"I know just the place Agent Mulder..."

"Just Mulder is fine sir."

"Fine, Mulder I don't really know how to thank-you. You helped me get my
daughter back. And you've just insured my family's protection for," he
glanced into the bag, "many years to come. Yeah, I think I know just the
place for this stuff. Don't worry it'll be far away from "Smith" and his
men." Ryan smiled to himself, "Very far away, and very safe."

Mulder held his hand out to Ryan, "It was a pleasure working with you
Jack." Ryan clasped Mulder's hand and replied, "The same is true here
Mulder. Don't worry I'll help you find your sister, no one deserves to
have their family ripped apart." The reverie was broken by Lincoln's
entrance into the room.

"Hey Jack, freshen up we're wanted for a news conference, and that includes
you to Mulder." Both men groaned.

The news conference was quick and to the point. Skinner only gave the
media the information that they had previously agreed upon. The conspiracy
angle was squelched along with Clark's real profession. The presence of a
member of the US Army was explained away with an unheard of exchange
program. All in all it was a masterful piece of redirection and
half-truths. They played up the Ryan story for all it was worth and the
media lapped it up. Truthfully it was a good story, father risking it all
to save his daughter from dangerous criminals. The movie right were
apparently already being negotiated. After the press' craving for
information had been satisfied the group was released from John Hopkins
care and they went home for more needed rest.

Day 8, 8:35 AM, Hoover Building, X-Files division,

The previous two days had been filled mainly with sleep and interviews but
the furor over the violent rescue had finally subsided and it was time to
get back to work. Mulder had arrived first and had been reviewing a new
case. Scully showed up with the results of some autopsies that she had
managed to do in between television appearances, and Lincoln brought a
large bag of doughnuts as a reward for a job well done.

"Gee thanks Lincoln, this gets me right in the gut." Mulder had cracked
when he opened the bag.

"What'll you eat the damn thing Mulder then you'll really get it in the
gut." Scully quipped as she devoured a chocolate frosted piece of pastry.

"Well, I knew that the quickest way to both of your hearts was through your
stomachs..."

"Actually the quickest way to a person's heart is through the ribcage."
Scully said quickly, Lincoln and Mulder stared at her, "What? Do I have
chocolate on my face?"

"Any ways as I was saying I figured the best award to give you two was the
gift that keeps on giving, a big greasy doughnut!" He helped himself to a
pudding-filled confection.

"I'm afraid to ask, but gives what?" Mulder said in between mouthfuls.

"Just wait about an hour Mulder." Lincoln said chuckling.

"A-hem" Skinner entered the office, "May have one?" he indicated the bag.
Lincoln waved him on, "Just so you two know your both up for commendations
for the Ryan case. Also your going to be getting some more help in the
near future. There may be forces at work against you, but because of this
little incident there are equally powerful forces looking out for you.
Just consider the help a late Christmas present."

"When can we expect the help? And who?" Mulder asked, he was suspicious
that another Krychek was about to be placed in their ranks.

"Well, actually Mulder us." A voice said behind Skinner and two agents
stepped out from behind the Assistant Director's bulk. "Agents Dale Cooper
and Clarice Starling reporting for duty."

-End
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------
-quickie disclaimer Dale Cooper belongs David Lynch, Starling is the
property of whoever wrote that book, can't remember his name right now.

-Author's end note: Why the ending? Well, I figured *if* "Twin Peaks"
took place in the same universe as the X-Files then Cooper would be all for
investigating X-Files, seems like his thing. And Starling? Well I dunno,
she's another famous FBI agent whose good w/the nutcases, and hey, I like
the character. Any ways hope you folks enjoyed X-Phobia 2: Truth Uber
Allies, stay tuned for X-Phobia 3: Whoso List to Hunt, due out sometime
next year(after finals and break and all)

-Interestingly enough i think the phrase "uber allies" means "Over all" in
German?? anyways that kind of counterpoints what actually happens in the
story, Family conquers all not the truth. What does it mean? Got me the
title and the ending were concocted *many* weeks apart and i never know
where this stuff if going when i write these puppies, just some food for
thought...
