Summary: Mulder and Scully's daughter, Dana, receives devastating news regarding her abduction. -------------------------------------------- A TWIST OF MEMENTO MORI Written by: Erin M. Blair -------------------------------------------- Holy Cross Memorial Hospital Tuesday, 10 a.m. Dana Katherine Mulder was looking at her MRI of her brain. "This can't be happening... I am not supposed to have this.." She was dressed in a white blouse, and blue skirt and blazer. Her shoulder-length auburn hair was swept to the side in a flattering style. Dana was waiting for her mother as she was the only one she called. She wanted, no needed, her mother who could understand what she was going through. She grabbed the MRI, and walked out of the room when she saw her mother, Dana Scully-Mulder. "Mom, you are the only one that I called." She showed her mother the MRI. "I have a nasopharyngeal mass. The placement of the tumor makes it unoperable and very difficult to treat." She paused. "I have cancer." Scully was shocked, to the say the least. She had never thought that her daughter would have cancer, the same type of cancer to be specific. "Dana, I had the very same type of cancer..." "I know," Dana replied, softly. "I remember what you told me." "What I can't figure out is how you got the cancer," Scully sighed. "You didn't have the same procedures done like I had." "Maybe I had," Dana replied. "Mom, you are not going to tell Daddy are you?" "Dani, he has to know," Scully replied. "Your father loves you, and I am sure that he wants to know." "I know that, Mom." "Your father and I are going to help you find out why you this cancer," Scully sighed. "We are going to find how to treat this tumor." "I am not going to let this beat me, Mom. I want to work," Dana replied. "I understand," Scully sighed. "I remember how it was when I had my cancer." FBI Headquarters X-Files Division Dana and Fox Mulder's Office Tuesday, 11:00 a.m. Dana Scully-Mulder walked into her and her husband, Fox Mulder's office. She couldn't get over what her oldest daughter had told her. A nasopharyngeal mass that could push towards the brain and mestasize into the blood stream. "Dana has cancer. The same type of cancer that I had." "Dana has cancer?" Mulder repeated. He couldn't believe this. He had thought that there was no way that she could have the same type of cancer that Scully had. Scully nodded solemnly. She could see that her husband was as stunned as she was. "It's unoperable, but treatable. There's always hope. However, she could die.." "I refuse to believe that. We almost lost her, Dana, and I am not going to lose our daughter again. We have to find the cause and the cure for her," Mulder replied. "I agree," Scully replied. "Let's go talk to Skinner to get his approval." Office of AD Walter Skinner 11:30 a. m. "Special Agent Dana Mulder has cancer?" AD Skinner asked, while Mulder and Scully nod. He remembered when Scully had cancer, but now Dana? "She wants to work," Mulder replied. "She got that from us. In any case, we would like to investigate the cause of her cancer." "And perhaps find the cure," Scully sighed. "We want to exhauste all possible avenues of investigation, sir." "All right," Skinner answered. "Anything to help your daughter." "Thank you, sir," Scully replied. FBI Headquarters X-Files Division Basement Office 11:45 a.m. Dana Mulder walked into her brother's office, and she was waiting for Fox Jr. to get off his cell phone. "Ok, I will talk to you later, Danielle, my sister is here." He was talking to his partner, Danielle Lesky. "Who was that?" Dana asked, making conversation. "Danielle," Fox Jr. replied. "She is on vacation in Boston for a week." He paused. "Got the results back?" "I have cancer. The same type of cancer that Mom had," Dana replied. "Dana, how?" Fox Jr. asked. He was shocked that his sister had cancer. He frowned. "You weren't under the same procedures as Mom had." "I don't know how I got the cancer. I think that we need to find the cause and the cure," Dana answered. "I agree. Does Mom and Dad know?" Fox Jr. asked. "I told Mom, and I am sure that she told Dad," Dana sighed. "Do you remember when we went to Allentown, PA regarding that audio tape of that alien?" She saw her brother nod. "Well, I met these group of women who remembered me. Let's go there." There was a knock on the basement door, and Fox Jr. exclaimed. "Nobody down here except for the most unwanted." Mulder walked in, and smiled at his twins. He was always amazed how much his son looked like a younger version of himself with his brown hair and hazel eyes, while Dana looked like her mother with her auburn hair, blue-green eyes, and china doll features. "Yeah, right." He paused. "What are the two of you planning?" "A trip," Fox Jr. replied. "Uh..." He looked at his sister. "We are going to visit Danielle in Boston. Right Dana?" "Right," Dana replied. "Danielle told us about an X-File that's in Boston." Mulder can see a lie within miles, and he didn't believe it. "Kids, I know that you are not telling me the truth. Level with me. Fox, has Dana told you that she has cancer?" Fox Jr. nodded. "We are also going to talk to women that Dana had met last year in Allentown, PA." "And maybe they can help me find the cause," Dana replied. "Your mother and I are planning to go there ourselves," Mulder sighed. "We want to find the cause and the cure for your cancer, Dana." "Since we all want the same thing, why don't all of us go?" Dana asked. "That's a good idea," Mulder replied, as he walked toward the door. "I am going to tell your mother about the two of you coming with us." The twins watch their father leave. Fox Jr. sighed. "Well, Dani, what do you think?" "It's like when we were three years old, and they took us on one of their cases. You know, when the flukeworm reappeared. Yuck," Dana recalled. "I hope that we never have to do that case again!" "Oh, you never know," Fox Jr. replied. "Stranger things had happened." "That's the truth," Dana sighed. She looked at her watch. "I guess that I have meet Chris to tell him..." She was referring to her partner and lover, Chris Krycek. She thought how handsome Chris looked with his warm brown eyes and brown hair. He was devoted to her as she is to him... "Want me to go with you?" Fox Jr. asked. "No," Dana answered. "I think that I can fight my own battles." Chris Krycek's Apartment Annapolis, MD Chris Krycek was watching television when he heard the knock at the door, and he opened the door. It was Dana. "Dana, hi!" "Hi yourself," Dana smiled, as Chris pulled her into an embrace and kissed her. "Thanks for the welcome." "Has your test results came back?" Chris asked. He knew that Dana was scheduled for an MRI. Dana nodded. "I guess there is no easy way to tell you. I have a nasopharyngeal mass. A tumor. Because of its placement, it's unoperable and its difficult to treat. There is a chance that I could die." "I refuse to believe that, Dana. Didn't you say that your mother had this cancer?" "Yes, she did. There's always hope," Dana replied. "My Mom and Dad as well as my brother are going to Allentown, PA to find those abductees who also have same type of tumor. Do you want to come?" "Sure," Chris replied. "I should come along since I am also your partner as well as your boyfriend." He paused. "I owe it to your Dad that he assigned us to be partners." "My Mom and Dad thinks a lot of you," Dana smiled. "Especially my Dad. He told me that you remind him so much of himself at times." "Really?" Chris asked. "How so?" "That you believe that there is life out there like my brother does," Dana replied, smiling. "And the fact that you are devoted to me like he is with my Mom." She paused. "Of course, we wouldn't have been paired if your father hadn't left the Consortium before we were born..." Dana Mulder was referring to Chris's father, Alex Krycek, who left the Consortium after learning the next phase would be which was to kidnap Dana's mother, Dana Scully-Mulder, a second time to transplant some of her eggs which were fertilized with an alien so she could give birth to her own human/alien hybrid. Alex was so disgusted that he quit, and never looked back. He started his own detective agency which works with the FBI to solve cases, including the paranormal. When Mulder found out what Alex sacraficed his "career" in the Consortium, and the reasoning behind it, he began to trust him again. He took a special interest with Chris Krycek and paired him with his daughter, Dana. "I know," Chris replied, softly. "So when do we leave?" "Tomorrow. Is that all right?" Dana asked. "Yes, it's fine. Dana, are you still going to keep on working?" Chris asked, concerned. "I have to. I am going to beat this thing. I feel fine, Chris," Dana replied. Her nose was beginning to bleed. "Dana, your nose is bleeding." Dana got up and went to the bathroom to clean her nose with a tissue. She heard Chris ask if she is all right. "I am fine." The tears rolled down her cheeks, and she looked at herself in the mirror. Allentown, PA Elisabeth Hopian's residence A week later Mulder and Scully walked towards Elisabeth Hopian's residence. She lived at the same house where Betsy Hagopian used to live before she died of cancer. Scully looked at the file folder, and began to read, "It says here that Elisabeth Hopian was a female member of the MUFON who was abducted a few years ago when our daughter was abducted, and she had undergone successful treatment of the same tumor that Dana has." "I think that this visit will be our successful one yet. I wish Dana and Fox Jr. was here..." "Fox and Chris had to take Dana to the hospital this afternoon for treatment," Scully sighed. "She wanted us to do this for her." "I know," Mulder replied, sadly. He wished that she didn't have to go through this cancer. He hoped that this Elisabeth Hopian has some answers as he watched Scully knock on the door. A young, burnette answered the door. "Hello. I'm Special Agent Fox Mulder, and this is my wife, Special Agent Dana Scully-Mulder. We are with the FBI. Are you Elisabeth Hopian?" "Yes," Elisabeth Hopian replied. "Why are you here?" "Our daughter, Dana Mulder, was diagnosed with the same type of cancer that you recently triumped," Scully replied. "We would like to know what that treatment was." "Come on in," Elisabeth said, as she ushered them in. "I am sorry about your daughter. I hope that this treatment will work for her." She took out an empty pill bottle. "This is what the doctor prescribed for me." Scully took the bottle from Elisabeth, and she wrote the name of the drug. "Any side effects?" "Not really," Elisabeth replied. "There was some nausea, but I could live with that. The tumor shrunk so much that it disappeared. The doctor said that I am completely cured." "Thank you so much," Mulder said, as he shook her hand. "You don't know how much this information means to us." Northeast Georgetown Medical Center Dana Mulder's room Dana was furiously writing in her journal. "Chris, as I start the treatments for my cancer. I can only think of what my Mom had faced before I was born. Time is like a heartbeat, and I can see how long a lifetime is. Since my return from the abduction, you had been my best friend (after my twin brother, of course) as well as my lover. I love you, Christopher William Krycek." She put her journal down, and she saw her sister, Melissa, sitting there. "Hi Melissa." "How are you?" Melissa asked, concerned. She had found out from her older brother, Fox Jr., about Dana's cancer. She was fingering her crystal on her necklace. "I had been better," Dana replied. She gave the journal to her sister. "Missy, can you put that in the nightstand?" "Sure," Melissa replied. "Mom and Dad called last night. They are coming directly here to talk to the doctor about your treatment." "Really?" Dana asked. "They found the cure?" "Yes," Melissa replied. "I don't know all of the details but they should be here soon." "That's good. I really want to talk to Mom and Dad. Missy, I am scared." "I know. I know you are, but you have to think positive. You know something?" Melissa replied. "What?" Dana asked. "Mom always said that you have the strength of your beliefs. Perhaps, that knowledge will fight your cancer." Mulder and Scully entered the hospital room, and noticed that their younger daughter was comforting the older daughter. "Isn't Missy sweet?" Mulder said to his wife, who nodded. "Yes, she is," Scully replied. "Dana. Missy. We have good news. We were talking with your doctor, Dana. We told them about the successful treatment that Elisabeth Hopian had, and he is willing to do the treatment with you." "That's great, Mom," Dana replied. "Mom, Dad, I want to try anything that will cure this thing." "I will notify the doctor," Scully said. She got up and left her daughter's room. Mulder looked at his daughters, and he hugged them both. "Dana, you are going to be fine. And Missy, I am glad that you are here for her." "Anything to help, Dana. Dad, she is going to be fine. She does have Mom's strength of her beliefs. Right?" Melissa asked, looking at her father with her hazel eyes. The same shade that she inherited from him. She was tall like her father, but she had her mother's auburn hair color, her creamy complexion as well as her china doll features. "That she does," Mulder replied. Northeast Georgetown Medical Center A few weeks later... Monday morning, 9 a.m. "The cancer is gone?" Dana asked her doctor. "Completely. You are cured," Dr. Michael Erickson replied. "The MRIs showed there was no sign of cancer." "Thank you," Dana replied. "Don't thank me," said Dr. Erickson. "Thank your parents. They are the ones who brought me the treatment information." He paused. "You are going to lead a cancer-free life from now on..." Dana Mulder's apartment Monday evening, 8:21 p.m. Chris Krycek came by to see Dana after she phoned him with the news that she was cured. "I am so happy for you," Chris said, as he kissed her. "Me too," Dana replied. "It gave me a whole new outlook on life. I think that it's time for us to plan the future..." "Are you proposing marriage, Dana?" Chris asked, smiling. "Maybe," Dana smiled. She kissed him back, and their kisses became more passionate. "I think that we better take this to my room." "We are finally going to make love?" Chris asked. He had always thought that she wanted to wait but now she doesn't. Dana didn't have to tell him. It was in her sparkling blue-green eyes that told him that she loved him, and wanted him. He followed her to her bedroom, and they began their night of passion... Later on that night, they were on her bed after a night of lovemaking. "I love you, Dana Katherine Mulder," Chris murmured into Dana's shoulder-length auburn hair. He stroked her hair, and he was thankful that she had gave him her whole self that night after telling him that her cancer was cured. Dana Mulder's apartment Tuesday morning, 8:30 a.m. Dana and Chris were sitting on the coach after they had breakfast reflecting their lovemaking from last night. "Chris, what we did was..." She was trying to find the words. "Most exhilarating experience that I ever had. You know, I was a virgin before..." "Really?" Chris asked. "I didn't know that, Dana." "Yes, I had never had done this before," Dana replied. She paused. "I feel so different. So alive." "I know what you mean. I feel the same way. Dana?" "Yes?" "Dana Katherine Mulder, will you marry me?" Chris asked. "I love you so much, and I think that we should be together forever." Dana smiled, and her eyes were moist with tears of joy. She wasn't expecting a marriage proposal so soon from Chris. "Yes, Chris, I will marry you!" She hugged him, and he slip her an engagement ring. "When did you get this ring?" "I had the ring for awhile, Dana. I got it a few months ago so I can ask you. I wasn't sure if you were ready, but today... We are ready for marriage," Chris explained. He paused. "I love you." "I love you too," Dana replied. "I can't wait to tell my family about our engagement." "And I can't wait to start a family," Chris replied. "You know, I bet that it is going to happen sooner than we think. We weren't protected last night. Were we?" "No," Dana sighed. "We weren't." Northeast Georgetown Medical Center Dr. Elaine Livingstone's office A month later Tuesday, 9 a.m. Dr. Elaine Livingstone smiled as she saw Dana Mulder walking in, and sat down on the chair. "Dana, I got the lab results back of your pregnancy test." "And?" Dana asked. She went straight to the point. "Am I pregnant?" "The pregnancy test came back as positive. Yes, Dana, you are going to have a baby in nine months. Is Chris Krycek the lucky man?" Elaine asked her friend's daughter. She knew that Dana Mulder was pregnant before, and had already gave birth to baby girl before after her abduction. However, the baby was a result of a transplanted fertilized egg of her mother's and alien. She wasn't sure if she should mention this to Dana. "Yes, he is. We're engaged," Dana replied. She was wearing her diamond engagement ring. "Congratulations to the both of you," Elaine replied. She wondered if Dana will ever see the baby that she had gave birth to.
