Summary: Mulder and Scully's daughter, Dana, is found barely alive but comatose in a Maryland hospital following her abduction, and they vow to save their daughter. --------------------------------------------- A TWIST OF ONE BREATH Written by: Erin M. Blair --------------------------------------------- Dana and Fox Mulder's residence Annapolis, MD Two Months Later Tuesday, Noon. Dana Scully-Mulder picked up a photo of her daughter, Dana. She saw the resemblance between herself and her oldest daughter. They both had the same blue-green eyes, the same red hair, and the same china doll features. She fingered the photo. "Dana, you don't know how much we all miss you..." She saw her husband, Fox Mulder, walked into living room. "Fox, we have to talk about Dana..." Mulder hugged her. "There are no leads, Dana. It's like she..." "I know," Scully replied. "It's like when I was abducted. Isn't it?" Mulder nodded. "Yes, it is. Don't worry, Dana. We are going to get her back." Unknown location Tuesday, 1:00 pm. Dana Katherine Mulder was laying on a table undergoing an another procedure to implant the rest of her mother's ova into her ovaries as she was surrounding by Japanese doctors. Her red hair was a few inches longer, and was pulled back. All she was wearing was a loose gown as she can no longer get into her tan skirt, white blouse, and her tan blazer that she had worn as she was very pregnant as they had sped up the gestation process. She was inserted her own mother's ova which was fertilized by an alien. Marita Covarrubias looked at the old man smoking Morley cigarettes. "She is not going to die, is she?" "No, we did not give her cancer. She is too valuable now," said the Cigarette Smoking Man. "She hasn't woke up since her arrival?" Marita asked. "No, she is in a coma," Cigarette Smoking Man replied. "Who knows when she will wake up?" He walked up to the Japanese doctors. "You did a good job, as usual. Agent Dana Mulder is very pregnant. She looks as though she will give birth at any time." "Her ova count is sky high," said the Japanese doctor. "She will create babies as long as we need her." "We are going to need her for a long time," Cigarette Smoking Man replied. FBI Headquarters X-Files Division Fox Mulder Jr.'s Basement Office Wednesday morning, 9am. Special Agent Danielle Lesky knocked at her partner's door. She heard him say "Come in, Lesky!" and she opened the door. "How did you know it was me?" "I just knew. You are the only one that knocks on the door," Fox replied. He looked at his partner with interest. "Um, Fox, you are staring at me." "Oh?" Fox replied. "It's just that you look so much like my sister with your red hair and blue-green eyes." "You haven't heard anything about Dana?" Danielle asked. She was worried about her best friend. "She will be found. She's very strong, you know." "I know.. Danielle, I feel that something was done to her. I don't know what..." Danielle sat down, and looked at her partner. Fox Jr. looked as though he hadn't slept for days. His brown hair was a mess, and his hazel eyes lost its sparkle. "I know how much you care about her and the bond that you have. You have to believe that she'll be back. I know that this has been very hard for you." "It has," Fox replied. "For the whole family. Mom and Dad decided that they want to take some time off from work but I am the one who is doing their tasks as well as our cases. They want to concentrate finding Dana." "I think that's understandable, Fox." Dana and Fox Mulder's Residence Annapolis, MD Monday, 9 a.m. One Month Later Mulder and Scully were at the kitchen table, and they were talking about their missing daughter, Dana. "Fox, I think that it's time that we laid our daughter to rest," Scully sighed. She didn't want to lose faith in their daughter but it has been three months. The memories of her own abduction still remained with her, and all she could think was that her daughter was feeling the same things. "I know that I should think this way but..." "We can't give up," Mulder replied. "It isn't like us." The phone rang. He picked it up and said in the his usual style. "Mulder." He smiled. "We'll be right there." He hang up the phone. "Dana!" He hugged his wife happily. "Dana has been returned!" "Where is she?" "Northeast Georgetown Medical Center," Mulder replied. "That's fitting. That's where I was returned, and where we had Dana and Fox." Northeast Georgetown Medical Center Monday, 9:30 a.m. Mulder and Scully walked down the hall towards their daughter's hospital room. They walked into Dana's room, and noticed their younger daughter, Melissa Elizabeth Mulder, was holding crystal near her sister. She was into the New Age beliefs much like her namesake and her deceased aunt, Melissa Scully. Melissa was a mixture of both her parents with her mother's auburn hair and creamy complexion and her father's hazel eyes and her height. She turned around. "Mom. Dad." She hugged them. "Dana is in a dark place. She is deciding whether to live or die." She nodded at her brother, Fox, who just walked in. "Fox. How are you?" "Better now," Fox replied. He hugged his parents. "Mom. Dad. She is going to be fine." "She will be," Scully replied to her son. She tousled his brown hair, and noticed that his hazel eyes were starting to sparkle again. Dana was covered with tubes which were monitoring her heart and her breathing, and she was still comatose. Her breasts were larger than before, and she looked about nine months' pregnant. Scully looked at her comatose daughter, and wondered what they had done to her. She saw the chart, and she read it. She showed this to Mulder. "Take a look at this." Mulder looked at the chart, and read it. "It said that Dana is pregnant." "There's more," Scully replied. "Her ova count is very high, more than it was before." "Who did this to her?" Mulder replied. "Maybe we better get some tests done on her." Their son, Fox, walked up to them. "I would know if Dana was pregnant. It's not something that she would hide from anyone." Scully nodded. "You're right." She paused. "Hopefully, when we run some tests on her, we will know more. I will ask my OB/GYN..." "You mean Elaine?" Mulder asked. His wife nodded. "I know that she is your college friend at University of Maryland." To both Melissa and Fox Jr., he added. "She was the one who discovered that your mother can have children. If she had never found out, we probably never been married or have all of you." He watched as Scully's cell phone rang. She talked for a few minutes and she smiled. "Who was that?" "Emily," Scully replied, referring to Melissa's older sister, and Fox and Dana's younger sister, Emily Samantha Mulder. "Emily is going to pick up David from the university, and will come visit Dana here." "That's good," Mulder replied. "I will be talking with Elaine about Dana's condition," Scully replied. "Be right back." Mulder watched his wife leave the room, and he noticed a distraught Chris Krychek walking towards them. "Hello Chris." Mulder thought. "Who brought her in here?" Chris asked. He looked very distraught and looked as though he hadn't slept for days. "That's the $64,000 question," Mulder replied. "We don't know." He paused. "I know how you feel, Chris. When my wife was abducted, I searched high and low for her. When she was brought here, she was in a coma just like Dana is now... I felt helpless and I tried to get the people who did this to her." "I want the same thing," Chris sighed. "I want to get even to those people who did this to her. Dana and I were thinking about children when we get married someday..." "She had mentioned that to her mother and I," Mulder replied. "I know that she wasn't pregnant before her abduction. They must have done something to her..." He paused. "In any case, trying to get revenge on Dana will not help her at all." Dana's out of body experience An Unknown Lake Monday, 10:30 a.m. Dana Mulder was wearing a brown sweater and pants outfit. Dana thought, as she sat in the boat looking out toward the dock. She saw her father, and her twin brother, Fox, and her sister, Melissa, at the dock. She saw a distraught Chris Krycek talking to her father. Northeast Georgetown Medical Center Dr. Elaine Livingstone's office Monday, same time. Dana Scully-Mulder walked into her friend's office. "What did you find out about Dana's condition?" Elaine Livingstone looked at her friend, and sighed. "Hi Dana. Please sit down." Scully walked towards a chair near the desk, and sat down. "As you know, there was no admission papers on file on her." "That's odd," Scully murmured. It was too much like when she was returned. No admission papers. No witnesses. "There was no evidence to what they must have done..." "Correct. They had cleaned her thoroughly," Dr. Elaine Livingstone replied. "She is clean as a whistle. However, I ran some tests to see if she is pregnant. She is." She paused, taking out Dana's results in comparison to the tests that Dana herself requested when she started to date Chris several months back. "With what, I don't know. I know for a fact that she hadn't had sexual intercourse with Chris Krycek yet as she is still a virgin. She is still a virgin, Dana. There was no evidence of sexual intercourse in her." "That doesn't take in account of the baby," Scully replied. "That's why I had run an another test. Dana, she is going to give birth to your child..." "How can that be?" "It seems that they had implanted one of your ova which was taken from you, and had it fertilized with an alien. Dana was implanted this fertilized egg when she was abducted, and now, she is nine months' pregnant. It looks to me that they had sped up the gestation process," Elaine sighed. She saw the shocked expression on her friend's face. "There's more.. I ran yet an another test on her ovaries to see if they took anything. It's intact, and she still has all her ova. However, they inserted all the ova that was stolen from you." "My poor little girl," Scully sighed, softly. "Why would they do this to her??" "I don't know. I think that this coma is her protection from this. When she gives birth, maybe she will wake up." "I hope so... What about the baby?" Scully asked. "I guess.. That's for you and Fox to decide as well as Dana." A nurse came in. "Dana Mulder has gone into labor now!" Scully and Elaine hurried towards Dana's room where a human/alien hybrid baby was trying to enter the world. Dana was still comatose as they try to help her deliver the baby. Five Hours Later Dana's hospital room Dana Mulder gave birth to baby girl, but she was still comatose. Going to labor had not woke her up as her parents, family, and friends had hoped it would. "Dana," Mulder replied to his wife, as Scully looked at their daughter. "There something that we've got to talk about..." "What?" Scully asked. "Dana had signed a living will, and it said that if she is under such conditions for more than necessary. She would like to die in such circumstances..." "I know that. I am a doctor, you know. She hasn't been in a coma for a long time under her living will," Scully replied. "She is still here, Fox. I can feel her." "I feel her too," Mulder replied. "What are we going to tell her about the baby?" "I don't know," Scully sighed, as she sat down at her daughter's bedside. "We will have to talk about that later..." Mulder saw Melissa and Fox Jr. walking into the room. "Hi kids." "Mom. Dad," Fox Jr. said, as he looked at his comatose twin. "I think that I know how to get her back to us. I was talking to Chris Krycek about Dana, and he said that I was the one person who could get through to her because of our bond. Can I try?" "I think that Fox could get her out of the dark place," Melissa replied. "I think that we should try it." "I agree," Scully answered. She was confident that her son's voice would bring his sister out of the coma as they had a close bond. She faced her husband as she remembered that it was Mulder who brought her out of the coma. "You brought me out of the coma with your words perhaps our son can do the same thing." "All right," Mulder replied. "Let's do it." He watched as their son sat down by his sister's side, and grasped her fingers. Fox Jr. knew that his parents and his younger sister was watching his exchange with Dana with hopeful eyes, but he had a feeling that this was going to work. "Dana, it's me. You always had the strength of your beliefs, but I want you to know that I'm here." He waited for awhile, and he felt a squeeze from his twin. "Dana?" Dana opened her blue-green eyes, and she saw her parents and her siblings. "Fox?" "I'm here," Fox Jr. replied to his sister. "You were in a coma." "For how long?" Dana asked. "I don't know how long... Probably since you were abducted," Fox Jr. replied. Dana looked at her parents, and her sister. "I don't remember anything after Duane Barry Jr. abducted me." "That's all right," Scully replied. She took out the cross necklace that she kept for her daughter, and handed it to her daughter. "I kept this for you." "My necklace," Dana replied. "I thought that I had lost it during the stuggle with Duane Barry Jr." She paused. "Thank you, Mom." She put her cross necklace on, and was very happy that she had it back. "You're welcome, Dana," Scully replied. She knew that her daughter was tired, and she led Mulder, Melissa, and Fox Jr. out of the room. "Mom?" Dana asked. Scully turned toward her daughter. "Yes, Dana?" She was happy that Dana was awake. "I had the strength of your beliefs," Dana replied. Her mother smiled, and she hugged her. The Next Day Dr. Elaine Livingstone's Office Northeast Georgetown Medical Center "They took the baby, Dana. It was too late to stop them," Elaine said, as Scully walked in. "I don't know why." "I have a feeling what they wanted to do with her. For their project. Why else? What are they going to do with a baby?" Scully asked. "They don't strike me as the caring type. I guess that this solves the problem of Dani taking care of the baby..." "You're not going to tell her?" Elaine asked. "I will tell her when she is ready to face her memories. She is like me in that respect," Scully replied, remembering her own fear of facing her own abduction. She paused. She thought of the baby that was both hers and her daughter's. "The baby...did look like Dana when she was born. I have this feeling that they will see each other eventually." End of Story Will Dana ever see the alien/human hybrid baby that she gave birth to?
