I don't own 'em. They are the sole property of Chris Carter, 1013 Productions, and the FOX Network. There, that's settled. Oh, and the very touching song belongs to Savage Garden. Spoilers: none Keywords: MSR (in spirit, I guess), Scully/Other (past? kinda), Alternate Universe (you're still here, right?), and Angst. There, that's enough keywords, right? Rating: PG Summary: "Another ditch in the road/ You keep moving/ Another stop sign/ You keep moving on/ And the years go by so fast/ Wonder how I ever made it through" ~Savage Garden "Two Beds and a Coffee Machine" Okay, author's ramblings....This story is part of a series, but it can still be read by itself. Two Beds and a Coffee Machine By Invisible Sun Fox Mulder owned his own hotel. It was a nice one. Not too expensive either. Perfect place to escape something. That's how Dana Scully-Atashkarian and her two young children ended up there. They were escaping something. Her husband. Kevin Atashkarian. The door opened and she quietly entered and went up to the counter. Seeing no one, she rang the little bell. A man, tall, dark-headed, handsome in his own way, came out from the back. She didn't look directly at him. He looked too much like her husband, the man she was trying to escape. And she didn't want him to see her face. There were too many bruises. "May I help you?" he asked kindly. She nodded, "I need a room for a few days. Two beds, if possible." "Sure thing." He pulled out the book for her to sign and she did so. He got the keys. "It'll be room number 28," he said, handing her the key. She had forgotten to keep her face hidden and looked at him as she took the keys. Seeing her face, he gasped slightly. She flinched. She quickly tried to reach the door before he could say anything. But he caught up with her. Stopping her, he gently placed his hand on her bruised cheek. she shuddered. Not because he scared her, but because his touch somehow comforted her. She couldn't explain it, but it did. "I got to go. Kids in back," she said and then hastily left. He didn't see her the rest of the day. Not until that night. When they both ended up together at the ice dispencer. "Hey again," he said. She looked at him, "Hey." "Look, I'm sorry for eariler. I didn't mean to make you nervous," he said quietly. "No, it's okay. To be honest, you're the first kind face I've seen in a while." He smiled. "Mommy!" a little voice rang out. She turned toward the voice, "Alex, I thought I told you to go to bed." The little girl, looked down at the ground, "I woke up and I didn't see you... I thought something happened." Scully bent down toward her daughter and hugged her, "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have left you two alone. I'm sorry." Alex looked over her mommy's shoulder, "Who's that?" She pointed to Mulder. Scully looked at her daughter, "Well, why don't you ask him?" The little girl walked cautiously up to him. "Hi. I'm Alex. What's your name?" Mulder smiled and bent down to her eye level. "My name is Fox Mulder." The little girl grinned, "Fox?" Fox smiled as well. So did Scully. Watching him and her daugher made her wonder why she didn't chose a better man to be the father of her children. But, then, if she didn't meet Kevin, she wouldn't have Alex or her little son, Daniel. Fox and Alex traded a few more words and then Fox stood up. "I think I better go now. Maybe I'll see you tomorrow?" Scully nodded. She hoped they did, too. The next day, they did meet up again and they talked some more. He discovered why she was running. He wanted to help her but she refused. She didn't tell him why. He also knew that today would be the last day he would see her. He walked out of the main office and headed toward her room. She wasn't there. All that was left was a solitary teddy bear. He picked it up, a tear coming to his eye. He prayed that they would be all right.
