"Where are you going?" asked AD Kersh. "To pack up my office." Spender replied, and turned to leave. "Agent Spender..." Kersh called but he never looked back in to AD's office. He turned to Mulder. "You have answers now? Why didn't I hear about those answers before?" He asked the agent angrily. "I've had answers for years." Mulder replied. "Then why didn't we hear about them?" "Nobody ever listened." Kersh leaned over the desk. "Who burned those people?" Mulder looked at Kersh and gave him what he believed to be the truth behind everything. "They burned themselves. With a choice made long ago by a conspiracy of men who th..." he glanced at Scully then back to Kersh, "thought they could sleep with the enemy. Only to awaken another enemy." Kersh was clearly angry, "What the hell does that mean?" "It means the future is here, and all bets are off." "Agent Scully, make some sense." Kersh said raising his voice. Scully looked up at Kersh and replied, "Sir, I wouldn't bet against him." Mulder glanced at Scully then back at the two assistant directors waiting for some kind of a response. Skinner spoke first, "Well, the director and we will have to review all that has happened. Until we come to a decision you two are still on suspension." He looked to Kersh and both nodded. "Dismissed." Both agents got up and walked out. They walked down the hall in silence both knowing where the other wanted to go. They got into the empty elevator and Mulder pushed to basement button. Once to doors slid closed and began to move Mulder let out a wail. "SCULLY!! We did it! We got them back!! I can't believe it!" He put his arms around Scully's waist and lifted her off her feet, spinning her around. "Mulder!" she yelled half laughing, half angry. "You can't get your hopes up too high. We don't know yet. For all we know we may get fired!" He set her down, but kept his arms on her waist. "I know you're excited, so am I but, we can't rule out everything else." "I need to go talk to Spender about this. Care to join me? The little rat bastard must be up to something." The elevator came to a halt and Mulder stepped out, Scully on his heels. She stopped suddenly as if remembering something she forgot. "Mulder, I just realized something." Mulder turned to her and looked at her with compassion. He touched her forearm. "What's that Scully?" "We might actually get the X-Files back. I don't know why, but it just hit me how amazing this is. We may actually get the X-Files back! Oh my god!" She launched herself into his arms hugging him close to her. "Whoa Scully! I know, I know." He put her down and put his hand to her cheek. His expression softened as he looked into her eyes. She smiled, knowing where all of this was going. This whole new relationship has started not so long ago, and they hadn't discussed it since before Antarctica. Her mind raced back to his apartment where it all began. She reached up and put her hand over his. "Not here, but I promise this will happen." she whispered to him. He took her hand and gently kissed it. "Let's go into the office." They held hands and walked up to the door, Mulder opening it. Both gasped at the horrifying sight. "Oh god! Spender! Mulder call 911!" Scully raced over to the fallen agent. "Spender can you hear me? Spender!" Mulder pulled out his cell phone and called 911. "This is Special Agent Fox Mulder at FBI Headquarters. I have an agent down. This is an emergency. Yes, were in the basement. Thank you." He hung up and knelt down next to Scully who had torn open Spender's shirt pressing down on the wound in his lower chest. "Spender, I need you to try and stay conscience. Listen to me dammit!" she yelled at him. "Scully you need to stay calm. Spender can you hear my voice?" Mulder leaned down as Spender opened his mouth to speak. "...Were right... all over... truth..." Spender began to bleed at the mouth as Scully continued to put pressure on the wound. Five minutes that seemed like a lifetime later, the paramedics arrived. They tried futility to stabilize him and eventually lifted him onto the stretcher. "What happened?" Skinner asked as Mulder and Scully made their way out of the basement office. "We don't know sir." Mulder answered honestly. "Agent Scully and I found him down here when we came down here to speak to him. Scully tried to revive him, but she was unsuccessful." "So you don't know who shot him or anything?" Skinner asked again. "No, sir. Please excuse us," Scully answered. "We have to get to the hospital to make sure he comes out OK." "That won't be necessary." said one of the paramedics on call. Mulder and Scully turned to him. "I'm sorry, he lost too much blood. Moving him did damage. He was just pronounced dead before we moved the vehicle. I'm sorry." Then he left. Scully turned to Mulder, her face pale and shocked. He placed his hand on her back and lead her out. Skinner spoke to the two torn agents with compassion. "I know he was the only link, we'll figure out something." Mulder nodded and left, leading Scully to the parking lot. He lead her right to his car. "Mulder, what--" He opened the door and gently eased her in, ducking his head in. "We need to talk, we're going to your place." He shut the door and climbed in the driver's seat. end part 1 X*X*X*X*X*X*X*X part 2 They arrived at Scully's after thirty minutes of silence except for the occasional sigh. Scully lead the way to her apartment and opened the door, Mulder locking it behind him and turning on the light. "Sit down, Scully." Mulder went into her kitchen and started rummaging around. "Mulder what are you doing in there?" she asked. He peeked his head in, "Making coffee." He smiled. Scully smelled the brew and closed her eyes, trying to relax. Just then her phone rang. Mulder answered. "Yes sir, she's here with me. I understand. No, you can't-- but-- all right. You'll be hearing from myself and Scully though." He hung up and took a deep breath, turning to Scully. She saw the pain and anger in his eyes and walked over to him. "Mulder? What is it?" "That was Skinner. Preliminary exams by the doctors show that he was murdered-- point blank range. He would have never survived, no matter what you did." He knew Scully felt partially guilty for his death. "I could have-- but I--" She stopped. "Why did you tell Skinner that he'd be hearing from you?" "Skinner agrees that unless we find the murderer, we may never convince the review board to give us back the X-Files. It's up to you and me to find the murderer. This could prove to be an X-File in itself. The proof we've been looking for." He reached out and placed his hands on her forearms, lowering himself to her eye level. "If we find the murderer, we find the truth." Scully looked into his eyes for a few long seconds before she nodded in silent agreement. Then he leaned forward and took her into his arms sealing the silent pact. Scully spoke into Mulder's shirt. "What if we can't find the murderer? What do we do then?" "I don't know Scully, because I can't think about not finding that person. I need the X-Files. WE need them-- don't we?" He pulled away still holding her. Scully smiled, "Of course I need them. I need the X-Files like I need you. And--" she hesitated for a moment. "I don't think I can live without you Mulder." Mulder smiled then leaned down and whispered in her ear. "I can't live without you either Scully." She looked up and they both smiled. Then Mulder leaned down and gently kissed her on the lips. It was only for a few seconds, but the memory would last forever. "I had best be going. I'll be here tomorrow morning to get you since we kinda left your car in the garage." Mulder said as he walked to door, Scully following him. "OK, good night Mulder." She debated then decided on her actions. She stood up on her tip toes and kissed his cheek. "Better be on time. I don't want to be late because of you mister." She pushed her finger into his chest for emphasis. "Yes ma'am!" Mulder saluted and turned on a heel, marching down the hallway to the elevator. He could hear Scully laughing from her still open door. Next Morning; 9:02 am FBI Headquarters AD Kersh's office "As a result of yesterday's misfortunes, the director has decided to call a panel hearing to review your case agents. It will be held one week from today." AD Kersh explained to Mulder and Scully as Skinner looked on. "Until that time," he continued, "You will once again have no business in the X-Files. Am I understood?" Both nodded once in acknowledgment. "Then you are both dismissed. You may return to your work until further notice." They got up and walked out of the office. "In my office agents." Skinner called to them as he disappeared behind his office doors. "Mulder--" Scully asked but he held up his hand in silence. He took her hand and lead her into the office. Skinner signaled to lock the door and for them to have a seat. He pulled out a file and set it on the desk. "It's him. The man you call CancerMan, or C.G.B. Spender, killed Agent Spender." Skinner handed the file to Mulder. "How do you know, sir?" He flipped through the file then passed it over Scully who looked over it thoroughly. "Mulder if you had looked over the folder--" Skinner began. "You would have seen C.G.B. Spender... or whatever his name is... in the photograph taken moments before we entered the office, as he was leaving the basement. Possibly just after Spender was shot." She handed the folder back to Mulder. Once again he flipped through until he came to the surveillance picture clearly showing G.G.B. Spender leaving the X-Files office. He threw the file down on the desk and launched out of his seat. Skinner almost got up but then realized that he was only pacing, Mulder's way of thinking. "This is insane. If we go out there--" He stopped pacing and looked at Scully. "Omigod Scully. You were right. All along, you were right." He continued his pacing. "What Mulder? What was I right about?" She looked at him in wonder. What had she said? "I just had this thought. Photographic memory does that to you. Diana. You were right Scully, about everything. Since she came back and was assigned to the X-Files, she's been working with Old Smoky. I can't believe that I didn't see it." He sat down and put his head in his hands. "Mulder you have really lost me this time. Talk to me." Scully laid a hand on his back as Skinner looked on. "I went to her apartment to find something and CancerMan came in. We talked for a few minutes, I threatened him, he laughed; you know the way it always is. After he left, Diana came in. I can only imagine what she heard." Mulder got up again and walked to the door. "Where are you going Mulder?" Scully called. "To catch a murderer." And then he was gone. end part 2 X*X*X*X*X*X*X*X part 3 Mulder drove to Diana Fowley's residence with one thing in his mind. Why? Why didn't I listen to Scully? Why do I trust anyone-- besides Scully? As he pulled into a parking place he turned off the car and sat there, trying to make a decision. Mulder got out of the car and entered the building. When he reached her apartment he knocked on the door. The door opened and he was face to face with someone he thought he knew-- but now realized he'd never really known her at all. "Fox, what are you doing here? It's 1:00 in the morning," Diana said sleepily. "I needed to talk to you but I can see I woke you." He had an icy tone in his voice. "Come in Fox, I can't sleep anyway." He stepped in and stood in the shadow. "Spender's dead. Murdered in the office this afternoon." "Oh no. By whom? Do the authorities know yet?" She sounded genuinely concerned, but Mulder was too angry to notice. "I think we know, we have his picture. I was wondering if you knew who it was Diana." Mulder stepped a little closer. "Why would I know?" "Because--" he didn't know if he should come right out and say it or... "I have reason to believe you might know the man who murdered Agent Spender. I also have reason to believe you may know why he was killed." She stood there, shocked, not knowing what to say. "Fox, I-- how could accuse me of-- killing or knowing about my partner's murder. How could you?" "He was here, that night. The night Cassandra was taken. He came, left then you showed up. What do you know about C.G.B. Spender, Diana? Who are you really working for?" As he said this he stepped into full view, throwing her an accusing glare. She slapped him, hard across the face. "Get out! Damn you Fox! After all I did for you, this is how you treat me. Get out!" She opened the door and he stepped out. "Good luck Diana. I hope you know what you're doing." And with that he was gone, walking to the elevator. As he was rounding the corner his cell rang. "Mulder." "Mulder it's me! I saw him! He followed you! Smoky's in the building! Mulder get out of there!" Scully yelled anxiously into the phone. Mulder was about to question her when a shot rang out in the halls. He made a mad dash back to Diana's apartment, dropping his phone in the process. He kicked in the door and looked around with his gun raised. He heard something and spun around, still pointing his weapon in shooter's stance -- directly at Scully, who had raced up behind him. "Sorry," Scully began, "I heard the shot and --" "Shhh! I don't know if they got out or not," he whispered. He walked down the hall to the bedroom and turned his head towards the horrifying sight before him. Diana was sprawled out on the floor with a bullet hole in her temple. She was twisted in an irregular direction, like all her bones had been broken. "Oh, God Mulder." Scully bent down to check for a pulse, weak and barely there. "Mulder, there's a wound in her temple, I don't think--" she began to stand up. "Scully do something! We can't let her die!" Mulder knelt down and felt for a pulse then began CPR on Diana. "Scully help me!" She knelt down, sought her heart and began to pump. Counting out loud to him, he breathed into her as Scully's own heart broke at the sight. She reached up and felt her neck. Nothing, yet Mulder kept trying. Scully laid a hand on his shoulder and he sat up on his heels. "She can't..." Mulder felt the non existant pulse for himself then got up, walking over to the couch. Scully called the coroner and gave her location and situation. "Thank you, we'll be here." She walked over to Mulder and sat down next to him. "I hate being right sometimes, Scully. I hate being right about this conspiracy, the people in it. A person I have known for so many years betrayed me-- and for what?" He put his head in hands and let out a sigh. "This is going to be a long road. A long and dark road. Whoever did this has gone to extensive trouble to cover it all up." "I know Mulder, I know. Now we have to decide where to go from here." She draped her arms over his shoulders and laid her head there listening to him breathe. "I think we should go to the Boys. I can't think of anyone else who we can halfway trust, believe and they may actually know something we don't." He turned to Scully and she nodded. Mulder put his arm around her shoulder and held her. The coroner came thirty minutes later and quickly examined the body, then zipped her up and took her away. The one living piece of evidence had just been packaged and shipped. It was up to blind hope now, and not a lot of time. end part 3 X*X*X*X*X*X*X*X part 4 Office of the Lone Gunmen "Dead?! She's dead? Omigod Mulder--" "Frohicke, I didn't come here for sympathy. I need your guy's help in finding someone. This is the second murder of an FBI agent in less than twenty four hours. I have-- We have come to believe that these murders are connected." "How are you so certain?" Byers asked. "Well the other murder was of Agent Jeffery Spender... the son of whom I think is the murderer. What can you find me on C.G.B. Spender? It's an alias. One of many actually." Mulder walked over to the computer Byers was at. "Well it could take awhile. What do you want to know? We can probably find anything, in a certain amount of time." Langley asked sitting down next to Frohicke. "Everything. I want everything. I want Scully to rest, so let her be OK?" Scully was lying down in the other room on the sofa, sleeping comfortably. She had a long day and had a feeling of gulit on her shoulders. "Sure thing Mulder. You should get some rest too you know." Frohicke said, looking over at Scully. Mulder shook his head no and went into the other room, sitting next to Scully on the chair. Within minutes he was asleep. 3 hours later "Mulder? Mulder wake up." Scully called to the sleeping form. "Ok guys did you drug him or something? He's not waking up." "Nope nothing, he passed out like a light." Byers said from the computer desk. "Mulder!!" Scully yelled. He mumbled something and she groaned. "Well, Mulder you leave me no choice." Scully leaned over and kissed him square on the mouth. Langly let out a startled laugh, Byers grinned happily, and poor Frohicke looked like he was going to pass out cold. Mulder opened his eyes and Scully pulled away. "Remind me to fall asleep more often during meetings with Skinner." Mulder said with a sly grin. "Not on your life. Byers has some interesting information about our guy." Mulder got up from the chair and walked over to the computer with Scully. "What have you turned up guys?" He leaned over Byers's shoulder, reading the screen. "Well from the looks of it, your C.G.B. Spender has taken an extended vacation-- in Tunisia. There's no record of that man leaving but there were survailence photos of him at the airport last night. About two hours after Diana's murder." Byers brought up another screen, and hit some keys to enlarge a section of the photo. "Oh my god. Mulder-- why would he go to Tunisia?" Scully asked as she looked at the photo. "I don't know. But whatever it is, it's important enough to make him get there in less then a day. According to the information, if he got on the soonest flight there is was a non-stop flight. He should be landing in about 12 hours." Mulder made a copy of the photo and printed it out. "Mulder, Skinner's never gonna let us go there. We have a meeting with the OPR in less then a week. Our jobs our at stake here, Mulder." "Yeah, well I guess we'll just have to make this a quick flight. Boys, you know the routine and the usual toys we'll need. Thank you and both Scully and I will be in touch." He took Scully by the hand and lead her out of the office. end part 4 X*X*X*X*X*X*X*X part 5 12 hours later Tunisian Desert Hotel "Mulder-- open this door and let me out! You can't keep me locked in here with no phone or way out! Mulder!" Scully yelled as she pounded on the connecting door. "Scully when you agree that this is the right thing to be doing and agree to help me on this case I'll let you out. Until then, no phone and no way out. I don't need you calling Skinner and letting him know where we are." Mulder explained calmly back at her. Scully let out a frustrated sigh and sank to the floor. "Mulder I don't want to lose my job over this. I don't want you to lose yours. If we stay here, sooner or later Skinner is bound to find out that we're missing and go looking for us." Mulder nodded his head and opened the connecting door, as Scully rolled back onto his feet. "Skinner's gonna go looking for you and me not Jack and Katrina Foster is he?" He knelt down to Scully's fallen form and kissed her forehead. "Please trust me? I want the X-Files back and so do you. This man we're looking for may be the key to it all." Scully sat up and turned to face him. "All right. I trust you. Let's just do this and get out of here before things get out of hand and we get outselves killed." "Deal." He stood up and brought her up with him, taking her in his arms. "Wanna make use of these hotel rooms before we go off and hunt bad guys in the desert?" He asked in a deep voice as he brushed the hair from her neck. "Mulder..." She whispered as he began leaving a trail of kisses down the soft skin of her neck. She tilted her head so he could move farther down her neck. "What about the bad guys in the desert? We have to find them you know." "They'll still be there in a few hours." He moved his hands from her waist to the top of her blouse and unbuttoned the first button as she untucked his shirt. "Besides, it's midday and too hot to leave the hotel. It's better for our health to stay here and put the FBI's money for this place to good use." She smiled and kicked off her shoes. "You mean make good use of the bed." He looked at her and gave her one of his priceless smiles. "Who said anything about the bed?" She looked up to see him smiling like a fool as he continued working on her blouse. "Fox Mulder you are a devil." She kissed his bottom lip. "Why yes I am Agent Scully. But I'm your devil." He pulled her close and kissed her hard on the mouth. She responded with a moan and moved her hands up his shirt on his bare back. Just then the phone in Mulder's room rang making both of them jump. "Dammit," Mulder mumbled as he grabbed the phone. "Hello? This had better be good, whoever this is." "This is your friendly computer bad guy hunter Mr. Tompson." It was Frohicke. "Making good use of the bed yet?" Mulder smiled and looked over to Scully who was sitting on the bed, fixing her hair and buttoning up her blouse. 'So much for putting the Bureau's money to good use.' He thought to himself. "What have you got?" "Well you're man's there. There's a small station set up about 10 miles from where you're staying. I'm sending the coordinates to your hotel room via the fax in Katrina's room. I can't stay on this line. I'll call you when we get more information." Then he hung up. "Check the fax in your room, Frohicke sent us directios to a small operation not far from here. C.G.B. is over there, doing something wrong, as usual." As he was talking she walked over to her ajoining room and retreived the fax. She handed it to Mulder. "Looks like we need to rent a car." She grabbed his neck and pulled him down to her mouth, whispering in his ear. "We'll finish this so called marriage game later, OK?" He pulled away and smiled. "I'm gonna hold you to that Katrina." "I always keep my promises Jack." Then they grabbed their things and headed for the lobby. 1 hour later They were both wearing khaki shorts and white shirts as they made their way through the underground complex. "Mulder, do you even know where you're going? We could be in the wrong place for all we know." Scully asked him as they moved through the series of tunnels and long hallways. "Accoring to the map Frohicke sent us, the central power unit is at the end of this tunnel. My plan is to shut it down and hopefully shut down they whole system, forcing old Smoky and his fellow conspirators out of the building." As Mulder predicted, at the end of the hall was a large area of boxed cables and various switches. "Which one Mulder?" Scully asked as she surveyed the maze of wires. "Yes, Agent Mulder-- which one?" The dark voice asked. Mulder spun on his heels and aimed his gun at the voice. "You smoking son-of-a-bitch. I was right all along. It was you wasn't it? You killed your son then turned around and killed his partner to cover your bloody tracks. Admit it!" Mulder yelled. "Agent Mulder, I should be kind to you now. If you pick the right switch, you destroy everything. All our plans from 50 years of hard work. Pick the wrong switch and we all die. Including the one thing you want so badly. The one thing that has kept your fire burning all these years." He continued to puff his cigarette "You bastard! Where is she?! Where is Samantha?" Mulder took the safty lock off his gun and was prepared to shoot him. Scully looked around and her eyes landed on a woman about her age with long brown curled hair, a pale complexion, and frightened eyes. "Melissa," Scully breathed. "Scully! No, there's no one there it's all in your head! Scully! She started for her and Mulder reached out and grabbed for her arm. He was too late. As if drawn to her form for some reason, Scully kept moving towards the woman. "No, Dana! Don't try and save me." The woman cried to only Scully. It was too late. Ten feet from the woman a shot rang out from high above the ground. Mulder screamed and hit the floor. Scully gasped as she looked at her stomach that had a dark red spot on it. She touched it then turned to Mulder. "Mulder..." she gasped, then collapsed to the ground. Mulder ran to her side and cradled her head. "Scully-- Dana..." He looked up and there was no one there. He turned around to see the CSM standing there smoking another cigarette. "He was right. You can't do it alone, can you Mulder? One man alone cannot fight the future." He puffed his cigarette again and then another shot rang out. Mulder winsed and covered Scully's body. The CSM fell to the ground and the man behind him spoke. "Maybe not one man can fight the future, but many can, you bastard." It was Skinner, and he was flanked by about a dozen other FBI agents Then he fired again, sealing C.G.B. Spender's fate. Mulder breathed and looked down at Scully who was smiling weakly. "Guess someone ratted us out." "Yeah," he whispered. "I guess so." "Agent Mulder, what the hell were you thinking coming all the way out here to Tunisia?! And who the hell are Jack and Katrina Foster?! Parker!" Skinner yelled to one of the agents. "Get the paramedics here on the double. We have an agent down." He turned back to Mulder and the fallen Scully waiting for an explantion. "Well sir, Agent Scully and I were just... putting the FBI's money to good use." He said with a smile as two paramedics ran in. end part 5 X*X*X*X*X*X*X*X epilogue 5 days later OPR meeting, 10:13 am "In conclusion, the building, and all areas surrounding it have been sweeped and emptied. We believe the operation has been teminated. It is our findings that there was a holographic projection that lead Agent Scull to be injured. We also believe that had we not arived, Agent Mulder would have also suffered her fate." Skinner glanced to the two agents. "As for the murderer of FBI Agents Jeffery Spender and Diana Fowley, he was killed by my own hands in an act of defence for Agents Mulder and Scully." Skinner nodded and sat down. Scully took Mulder's hand in her own and smiled. They now knew who the trusted ones were. "Agents Mulder and Scully." The director began. Mulder stood and helped Scully up as she winsed at the still tender pain in her stomach wound. "Due to the current lack of personnel, in the X-Files department; it is my decision to reinstate you both to the department. This hearing is closed." Mulder smiled and hugged his partner. "Told you it was worth the trip." He turned to Skinner who was walking over to them. "Congratulations Agents. You deserved this, after all the hell you've been through." He shook both of their hands. "What was the point of the married couple though? Trying to spend more money then you already do?" Both agents blushed at the mention of their "marriage" in Tunisia. "Well sir, we didn't want you following us or stopping us, so we went undercover." "Well next time when you decide to play married couple, tell me. This is gonna cost the Bureau a fortune." Mulder grimised but Skinner laughed as he headed for the door. "Yes sir, will do." As Skinner opened the door her turned back to see Mulder pull Scully into his arms and her resting her head on his chest. "By the way Agents," They both turned their heads, "When is the wedding of you two going to be?" He turned back and headed out the door with a knowing smile on his face. Mulder looked down at Scully and smiled. "So, Scully, when do you want to get married?" She smiled back and replied, "When Reticulans land here on Earth." Mulder's face fell. "Or next May whichever comes first." They both smiled and walked out of the room, and headed to their home: the basement office.
