It was the only thing I could do. I could not bear to see the look in his eyes when he realized that *I* had betrayed him. Me, the only one he trusts. Trusted. I realize he has stopped breathing. ***************************** DANA SCULLY'S APARTMENT 1:15 a.m. I pick up my cell phone and dial the familiar number. How many times have I called him? How many times has he not answered? "Mulder." "Mulder, it's me. I, um, I I've been here before...This is where they took me!" He's awake now. "Scully? Where are you? Are you okay?" "I, I'm fine. It's just, theres something here, something about my abduction and your sister." "Where are you?" "In a cabin by where those girls were abducted last year......I don't know the address...I don't think it has one." "Stay where you are, I'll be there." I walk over to the mirror. I need to look traumatized.....or at least as traumatized as I usually do when I *let* Mulder help me. I have time...The helicopter leaves in an hour, and it will take him at least three to find the cabin since the scrambler on my phone won't let him trace the call. I think about what I am going to do. My orders were to kill him. To shoot him. Make it look like a suicide. ******************************* I have to walk from the small clearing where the helicopter dropped me off and is waiting for my return. I open the door to the cabin and sit down at the table. I've decided what I'm going to do. 25 minutes later, the door opens and Mulder rushes in. He looks exhausted and worried, and for a second I feel remorse at what I am doing. "Scully, are you alright?" "Yes, I think so. This is where they took me." Actully, its an old hunting cabin that belonged to an old friend of the family. He crosses over to me and touches my shoulder. It startles me, and he apologizes. "You said something about my sister?" How can I do this? I close my eyes for a minute. "Scully?" "Mulder...sit down." He does, and I stand behind him. I reach into my pocket and feel the syringe. I have to do it before I lose my nerve. In one swift movement I bring it out and into his shoulder. He tenses, and then relaxes. I drop the syringe. His eyes close. He slids out of the chair and I sit beside him. "Mulder. I'm so sorry." ************************************** I am crying. He looks so peaceful and serene. I cannot believe that this is it. That this is how it ends. I knew from the start that it would be something like this, that I would have to eventually betray him, but I had tried so hard not to think about it. They will come looking for me soon. Its now or never. I pick up the second syringe. Blackness all around, and then light......
