Like he knew something she didn't, and considered whether to tell her or to keep silent. "What Mulder?" She saw Mulder tense abruptly. He probably didn't know she had caught him staring. For a second she wondered if he had thought about the same thing she had lately. But she dismissed that idea quickly. He didn't feel that way about her, and she was a fool to think otherwise. "Huh Scully?" "Why were you looking at me Mulder? Do I have a stain or something on my clothes, or did I put them on the wrong way?" She was kind of getting mad at him now. He knew damn well what she was talking about, and would probably try to talk around it. Like he had done all week. Like he had done all month. Like he had done as long as she could remember. That thought shook her awake. *If* he was thinking about the same thing she was, and avoiding that for so long... "Oh sorry Scully, I guess I was day dreaming. There was this major storm last night, and the thunder and lighting kind of kept me awake. Not that I sleep a lot anyways, but the storm really didn't help much". Just like she had thought. He tried to change the subject, and talk his way out of it. But not this time Mulder. "No, Mulder. I won't accept that load of crap anymore. Why don't you tell me what is really going on, huh?" "Huh? I don't have a clue what you are talking about Scully. Maybe I can better ask *you* what is going on. I mean, you have been acting this weird, and agitated for over a week now. And you get grumpy whenever I look at you. Is it that time of the month again, or something?" That was a very low blow. And also a defense-mechanism. She knew that because she used it herself too. When something personal was asked, just try to turn the tables, and piss off the person asking. But, not this time... "I have been agitated, as you call it Mulder, because you were overreacting on that case. Because you, so-called tried to protect me by dumping me once again Mulder. I mean Jesus, I thought we were *equals*" "We *are* equals Scully. And I do treat you as one. It's just..." "What, Mulder? It's just what?" "I...I...nothing, Scully" Inwardly she sighed. She had a feeling they had been very close to breaking down these walls, these barriers between them. This chance was probably gone. Lost. And she couldn't help wondering if there ever would be one again. Mulder looked down at his feet. And after a couple of seconds he met her gaze again. His eyes were a conflict and mixture of emotions. Amongst them were affection, anger, sadness, and some she couldn't indentify. She was scared by that facial expression, very scared. "Why do you want to know, Scully? What is so important that you push this far, and push me so far? Are you afraid Scully? Are you?" Turn abound is fair play, but in his case he cheated. "No I...I..." "What, Scully? What?" She should have known he would turn the tables this way on her again. Maybe he was more adept at playing this little game, then she was. But he might have won this battle, she would win the war. "Nothing, Mulder. Nothing" He looked away for a second again, probably considering his next move. She saw a little flicker in his eyes, meaning he was hurt in some way. But just as quick as she had seen it, it dissapeared again. "I..uhh, I have to go now, Scully. The Lone Gunmen told me they had something they wanted to show me" She knew it was an exuse, a lame one at that. He tried to use a fake smile on her, but it failed miserably as the curls of his mouth quickly dropped downwards. Then he turned around, grabbed his coat and walked to the door. "Wait Mulder, I..." He turned his head and looked at me expectingly. And I had the line on my tongue. The same line that was playing over, and over, and over again in my head.*I love you, Mulder, I love you*. But I couldn't say it. Couldn't risk what we have now. So I stared back at him with a blank look on my face. His eyes held mine for one long moment. Then he turned around and left the office. Which now seemed so much bigger without him. I tried to speak out the words, even though he allready left. Tried it one more time, one last attempt to reveal my so long kept secret. But the words came out shakingly, and then died on my lips. Untold... The End (teehee)
