Archive: Keep e-mail attached. Rating: G Disclaimer: M&S are not mine, and neither are the beautiful lyrics. Summary: The title says it. Note: Dedicated to all the dreamer's. ;) Send all comments and such to flor_r@hotmail.com Additional Note: I really didn't want to over-categorize this story, it's kind of an MSR, and I really don't like the UST thing. It's just silly. How about UTL, Unresolved True Love. :) 'What's so amazing? Keeps us star gazing? What do we think we might see?.....' A soft hum illuminated from somewhere within the night air, blending oddly with the sounds of the night, of the time when dreamer's came out. And that's exactly who sat in the still of the night, a lone figure. Looking up into the night sky, Fox Mulder sat below one of the silent trees at Washington Park, legs pulled up to his chest, arms crossed over his knees. "Starry, Starry night..." He hummed softly to himself. After a few moments, he let out a small chuckle. "I don't know the words." Taking in a deep breath, he closed his eyes. He loved this time. The night. Peaceful. So Peaceful. Not the kind he should be used to. Not the kind where werewolves. Monsters. Ghosts. Demons. Goblins. Or even cheap drug dealers and hookers came out. But the kind when it was just still. The time when the earth and heavens rejuvenated their life. Took their own time out to rest. Hoping that it's occupants will take hint and follow. Which is one of the reason's he did not. What was it about the night that he wasn't supposed to see? Really? Letting out a tired sigh, he realized he already experienced that answer. And that's why he hoped there was a different one. Anything but the answers he was so used to receiving. Anything but THAT darkness. Opening his tired eyes, he let out another sigh. "Why are you here?" He asked, not really sure who the question was supposed to be directed to, if anything. "Because I'm crazy." Turning quickly, he sought out the figure that now stood before him through the darkness. "Scully?" Emerging from behind the tree, Dana Scully gave a slight smile. "Hey." Moving aside to offer her ground, Mulder commented. "Would that be crazy for coming here, or just all around?" Taking her place beside him, she answered. "Right now I'm not too sure." Smiling, Mulder returned his gaze upwards. He didn't need to ask her how she found him? Why she came? Or even how she knew he was out here? The answers were just too obvious. She just knew. He smiled again, but this time inwardly. "Peaceful." Scully's gaze focused on the heavens as well. Mulder nodded. "Yeah. And look, full moon." He pointed to the bright object. Scully took notice. "It looks happy tonight." Mulder took on a look of puzzlement. "Yeah. Now that you mention it." He smiled again, this time wickedly. "That old man must've gotten some tonight." Scully laughed despite the lame joke. After a few moments of star gazing, Mulder questioned. "Ever wonder what's up there Scully?" Scully turned her focus to him, a look of amazement, humor, and shock marred on her pale feature. "You're actually asking ME that?" Muldet let out a snort. "Yeah. Why not?" "I think you pretty much have it pegged down. Wouldn't want to ruin your dreams Mulder." He took his attention away from the above and focused on her. "Ha, ha." Scully smiled. "Seriously though." She turned her gaze skywards once again. "You want to hear about galaxy's or comets? Perhaps black holes?" Mulder shook his head. "No Scully, not the scientific part." Scully gazed at him through the corner of her eye. "What's new?" Mulder let out another snort. "No. Really. I mean, forget about everything that includes science." He hesitated. "And that includes--UFO's and little grey men." Scully laughed, surprised. "What?" She turned to look at him and saw that his eyes were intensely focused on the night above. He was serious. "You mean like supernatural?" "I guess, if that's not considered science as well." "You mean like GOD?" He tilted his head. "Maybe." "Like do I think that GOD is up 'there'? Somewhere?" He nodded. "Think about it Scully." "I have. Somewhat." He let out another sigh, letting his shoulders slump from the weight of it. "Ever think about how the universe just appeared? Aside from the science theory." Scully sat silence for a moment as she thought of it. "Not completely." Mulder nodded. "There are lot's of theory's Mulder." Mulder smiled. 'Theory's'. "Such as?" She shrugged, remembering one. "Well, like the one about the man and the bull, or something like that." She forgot the whole story. Mulder finally turned to look at her. "Well, it's said that there is this enormous man who holds the universe in his hand, and the bull or whatever, is his guard." She knitted her brows. "Or was it a dog?" "What else?" "Well, it's said that it would take a bird thousands of years just to fly from one of the bull's horns to the other." Mulder's eyes widened slightly. Mind candy. "And?" "And that's it. Well, that's all I know." She shrugged again. "I don't even know if it's accurate." Mulder nodded. "Anything else?" Scully shook her head. "No. But I do wonder." Mulder returned his gaze to the sky. The two sat in silence for a minutes, enjoying the night, spectating. When Mulder finally spoke again, Scully startled a little. "Ever just REALLY wonder, Scully?" His voice sounded rough as he emphasized the word, taking in a sharp breath through teeth. Scully looked up at the Big Dipper, which seemed to be just a little brighter today. "No. Not REALLY." Mulder turned back to her, surprised. "Why not?" "What would be the point?" His eyebrows now went skyward. "What would be the 'point'?" She nodded. He bit his lower lip. "Well I would think that the point in question was an important one." "Why?" "Maybe because it's a question that we'll never really know the answer to." She nodded again. "You mean like the chicken and egg thing." Now Mulder nodded. "Then there you have it." "Have what?" "Your answer." "I do?" Scully let out a slight yawn. "Yeah." She turned to face him once more. "Mulder there are some things that are just meant to be. In this case it's a question." "So you mean we're meant NOT to know the answer." "Yes. If those questions are taken away, then what? We'll stop asking and learning." "So basically it's a 'then what?' situation?" "Yes." Mulder nodded. Understanding. Somewhat. Maybe this was one of those situations she was referring to. If he stopped wondering, then what? He smiled. They sat silent for a few more moments until the silence was interrupted by a slight humming sound. Mulder towards Scully again and realized that she was chuckling softly. "What?" He asked curiously. Scully looked down at her lap. "Well, I was thinking that it's kind of like us." "Like us? Like what?" He thought he might like where this was going. "Like if we learn everything about each other, then what? If we...." She trailed off, and Mulder thought that she was actually blushing. He couldn't tell in the night's disguise. He decided to press just a little. "Well some things are worth learning because they have more answers and learning experiences to be sought out and found." Scully continued to stare at her lap. "Yeah." She said it more to herself than him. He continued to stare at her. Wonder. Questions. What? When? How? If? When? He decided he liked that one better. He smiled and turned his gaze back to the sky. After another few silent moments, this time Scully noticed a slight humming coming from somewhere within the night's curtains. She lifted her gaze and realized the source. "Mulder, what are you humming?" She noticed that he was swaying slightly. "Just a song." She smiled. "What?" He smiled in turn. "Remember this one Scully?" Hesistantly, he started to sing. "When I was just a little girl..." He trailed off as Scully let out a soft snort. "Just bear with me." She smiled sweetly and nodded. "Ok." He started again. "When I was just a little girl, I asked my mother what lys ahead?..." " I do." She remembered happily. "Sing with me then?' "And ruin your tune?" Mulder laughed. "Too late." She smiled as Mulder nodded at her. "Ok. When I was just a little girl, I asked my mother...." Scully started to sing hesistantly, softly, quietly. "I asked my mother what lys ahead?" Now both of them sang in unison. "Will I find rainbows? Will I find love? Here's what mama thus said. Ke Sera, Sera. Whatever will be, will be. The future's not ours to see. Ke Sera, Sera...." Both trailed off, giggling. " I forgot the rest." Scully admitted. "Whatever will be, will be." Mulder concluded. "That all?" She stood. "I think." He followed her. "We better get going. It's getting late." He nodded, and she turned to start back to her car, but jumped slightly as Mulder's hand reached out and locked around her wrist. She stared at him in surprise, but no discomfort. "What?" "We sang, but we didn't dance." She could see the gleam in his eye through the moonlight. She smiled, shaking her head. "Oh no. I've already embarrassed myself enough tonight." He tugged on her hand, persuading. "C'mon Scully. Let's dance with the creature's of the night.' "Mulder you ARE a creature of the night." She joked. He blew a small raspberry at her. "C'mon." Scully hated it when he turned full puppy dog on her. Talk about being a creature. She rolled her eyes and stepped closer to him. "Just don't bite me Scrappy." He laughed. "I do have all my shots should my teeth slip." She laughed. Good. After a few seconds of swaying, Scully pulled back. "This feels ridiculous. No music? And don't even think about getting me to sing again." She warned. Mulder smiled. "Ok, but now I'LL have to do it." She frowned. "Ok. You're right. Wouldn't want to frighten away all my relatives." He thought for a moment, considering. Suddenly, he let out a breath of air as a thought occurred to him. "How's your mental state today Scully?" She gave him a puzzled look. He shrugged. "Well obviously not good since I'm here with you." He snorted. "Ha, ha." She smiled. "Well, I was thinking if you know a certain song that maybe we could both hear it in our head's, and that way we, or rather, I, wouldn't have to sing." He batted his eyelashes playfully. She eyed him, her brows knitting. "Are you serious?" He nodded. "Yes." She continued to stare at him. "Or I could just continue singing...." "No!" She said quickly. He grabbed at his chest, mocking playful hurt. She laughed once more. "Ok, let's think of a song." They both looked aside as each of them thought. A thought suddenly occurred to Scully. "Well, there is this one song that..." She trailed off. "I don't know." "What is it?" He asked, curious. "Well I only thought of it because it was the song that my brother sang to his wife when they were ging out." Her voice became light as she thought of it.. "He told me about it and I thought it was a beautiful song." "What's it about?" She looked down at his chest, hesitating. Finally bringing herself to strength, she pushed aside her nerves. She looked up and met his eyes, serious. "Love." Mulder swallowed. His heart started to pound just a little bit faster at the look there. But he simply smiled. "Really?" "Yes." She continued to stare at him, summoning all her courage to keep a calm exterior. "Ok." Mulder said simply, despite he whirlwind that now consumed his being. Scully decided to continue, quickly. "It was called, 'Could I have this dance?'" Mulder tilted his head, swallowing. "I know it." Scully smiled, nodding. "Good." Mulder smiled again. "Well, Scully." He stepped back and playfully bowed before her. "Could I have this dance?" Her present smile widened. "Ok." She said softly, simply. Mulder's own smiled widened slightly, but quickly became smooth as Scully stepped into him. Slowly, they started to sway as each of them heard the song in their heads. 'I'll always remember, the song that was playing, the first time we danced and I knew, as we swayed to the music, and held to each other, I fell in love with you. Could I have this dance? For the rest of my life. Would you be my partner? Every night. When we're together, it feels so right. Could I have this dance? For the rest of my life. I'll always remember that magic moment, when I held you close to me. As we moved together, you're all I'll ever need. Could I have this dance? For the rest of my life. Would you be my partner? Every night. When we're together, it feels so right, Could I have this dance? For the rest of my life.....' After nameless and uncounted time, they finally pulled apart, smiling at each other. The air of the night was still, silent, desperately trying to keep it's secret's. Mulder finally spoke up. "Well. I hope that this experience won't drive you out of the room next time I ask you to dance?" He meant it as a joke. But they both knew that it didn't sound that way. Scully gave a forced smile. Mulder smiled his gratefulness. "Well, it is getting late." She included. Mulder nodded, and after a second, he gestured a head tilt in the direction of their cars. "C'mon." Scully smiled again. The two made their way silently, side by side, to each other's vehicles. Mulder stopped at his car door and turned to look at Scully in front of her's. Their eyes locked. And after another few moments, they smiled in unison at each other. Mulder gave a wave, and Scully a nod. Each got into their own car's, the engines roaring up. And then all was quiet under the night sky once more. '....Someday we'll find it, rainbow connection, the lover's, the dreamer's, and me.' End.
