"The Wedding"

My legs are like jelly and I'm amazed they can still hold me up. Amazed, but grateful. The last thing I need is for my legs to buckle under me in front of all these people. I glance around the Church, barely even registering the faces I see. Except for her's. those bright, blue eyes still captivate me after all this time and for the millionth time I wonder how I haven't physically drowned in them yet. I realise that she's even more beautiful now than she was that day she first walked into my office - and my life. I have to drag my eyes away from her, for she is not my focus right now. I turn instead to Olivia.

Olivia. She looks radiant today, prettier than ever before. I remember the day she came into my life, too. I was enchanted from the first moment I laid eyes on her. I never really believed in love at first sight but I know better now. I've fallen hard - twice. First Scully and then Olivia. I love Olivia so much that I think my heart might burst. Today, my love is mingled with pride. She looks so beautiful in the dress she spent months choosing but wouldn't let me see. Typical Olivia - she loves surprising me. I can't believe that the beautiful young woman by my side belongs to me. I suddenly feel so possessive of her that I don't even want to share her with everyone in this Church.

I glance around again and this time my eyes lock with her's. For the first time. I see the tears shining in them, threatening to spill over onto her soft, flawless cheeks. My first thought is that she'll be really mad if her make-up gets ruined but a voice in my head forces me to be serious. I know why she cries and my immediate instinct is to run to her, comfort her, as I have done so many times in the past. But not today. Today belongs to Olivia and I must devote all my attention to her. Idly, I think how much better Olivia Mulder sounds than Olivia Knight.

I drag my thoughts back to the present, realising it will soon be time for me to speak the two words I have practised for weeks. I concentrate on the minister's words, resolute in my determination not to look behing me again, to give everything I have to make today special for Liv.

The minister pauses and I realise the time has come. Taking a deep breath, I speak the words loud and clearly. "I do". Olivia smiles beside me and I take this as my cue. I step backwards to join my beloved wife and gently brush away her tears of pride and joy. I slip my arm around her still-tiny waist and we fix our eyes on Olivia, our beautiful, longed-for daughter.
