I LOVE FEEDBACK!!!!! wink wink, nudge nudge. mulderlove@hotmail.com !!!!!! **************************************************** *************What about Mulder********************** by:Melissa Scully I walk into the office, and see Mulder staring down at a report I'm sure I've never seen before. The last thing I want right now is something more to worry about. I haven't told him yet, but my boyfriend from both high school and college has come right back into my life thanks to my mother. Though Jason is a friend of the family, and he is a really great guy, but I don't want him to interfere with Mulder and mine's relationship at the moment. Come on Mulder, say something. "Hey." He says looking up at me. "Hey." There is a short pause. I really hate that. "So, uh, what are you doing?" I question, knowing the answer. He breaks the gaze and focuses on giving me an explanation on what he's reading. He fumbles through his papers, then pulls his hands together behind his head and leans back. "Nothing." He says a little more that casually. "'Nothing'?" I interrogate. "Come on, tell me what you were reading." "Nothing." I raise an eyebrow at him, like I'm ever going to believe him when he says that. "*sigh*Come on Mulder, you and I both know, with you, nothing is always something. I mean, after seven years-" "It's a case. A voluntary one. Skinner called me to tell me that it wasn't necessary for us to investigate this one." "Skinner said that?" I ask surprised. He shrugs. "Yeah, he told me to tell him what we made of it and decide whether or not it's worth checking out." "And is it?" I ask. "Not as far as I can tell." Another pause. "Then lets forget about it." He nods. "Okay." pause. "So, what should we do?" "Well, actually, I need to talk to you about something. And I don't want this to sound awkward, like a cheap romance movie, but, my old boyfriend is in town -." A hint of a smile crosses his face. "- And before you say anything, I want to tell you that if he just happens to drop by the office at 11:15 today, that I expect you to be nice, and no little eye games, or rough shaking of hands, or anything else that might embarrass me, or risk my mother finding out that you were the one that drove him away from me and the rest of my family." I pause for a moment to catch my breath, "And no, we aren't romantically involved anymore. We are just friends." No immediate reaction. I don't know if that's a good sign, or a bad one. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. "Okay." He says lightly. He starts to get up from his seat. "That's it? Just 'Okay'?" "That's it." He says taking his coat and smiling. "Where are you going?" "Home. Skinner doesn't need us here. I'm gonna tell him about the case, and then I'm heading out. I'll be back in a few hours." "But, Mulder-" "I've gotta get ready for our little date with your friend" He says equipped with sarcastic quote marks. Big, long, irritable sigh. ******************************* "Hey Scully." Mulder says walking in, It's 11:10. I hate him sometimes. "Mulder, I'm begging you, please don't do anything - " "Hey, you trust me right?" "Yeah." I say with a questioning gaze. "So, what makes you think I would do anything like that?" "*sigh*I just don't want you to interrupt my lousy attempt at a normal life." "Oh he isn't just a friend?" He says smiling. "That's not what I meant." "No, no, I gotcha." *sigh* "Dana?" A voice call behind me. I whirl around. "Jason, hi." I say. Please don't hug me. Please don't hug me.Please don't hug me.... Damn. Just a short one. Mulder's -always convenient - cough breaks us apart. "Uh, Jason Thomas, this is Fox Mulder." They shake hands. "We're just friends." Mulder says. I'm gonna kick his ass. Jason looks him over weirdly. I don't blame him, I do it every day. "Nice to meet you." He says. He turns to me, letting go of Mulder's hand. "So, Dana, your mother invited me to your little brother's wedding to Patricia Greenfield. Can't wait." "Yeah! He's really excited." "I remember you hating everything about her." "Yeah, well she puts a lot more clothes on now-a-days." He chuckles, Mulder holds it back. "Well, she certainly has taken a liking to you, apparently, of what your mother has told me at least, is that you are a bride's maid." My eyes widen. "I must be the last person to know about that. " "Yeah, Patty's got it all figured out. She actually wants to meet with you tomorrow for a dress fitting, can you make it. It's at about 5:00 Maggie said." "Yeah, that's fine." "Great. Well, I'll see you on Saturday." "Okay." He's coming closer to me, Uh oh. He kissed me on the cheek. He wasn't supposed to do that! Why the hell did he do that? He leaves. "Hmmmm..." Mulder starts. "Don't even think about it." ************************* Ding dong. Yeah, that would be my doorbell. It's Mulder no doubt. I open it and find a hansom leather-jacketed figure hovering above my head. He greets me smiling. "I'm not interrupting an intimate moment with a certain non-boyfriend, am I?" He says glancing around my living room. "No." I say slightly pushing him into my apartment, and closing the door. "So what's up?" He says sitting down. "Shouldn't I be asking that question?" I ask sitting next to him on the couch. "Are you excited about the wedding?" Mulder asks, smiling again. "For my brother, yes. For myself no." I say. "Why not? You don't want to see 'Jason'" "That's the problem,Mulder..." I trail. "What do you mean?" I pause. "Mulder, Jason Thomas and I broke up for the mere reason that at twenty three, marriage was a likely thing, but we weren't ready for it, unlike Bill was, and like my parents were. We loved each other, for sure, but we were still kids, you know, we hadn't gotten past that stage of playful yet rebellious teenage part of one's life." "So what happened?" "The death of his sister, and my close friend, tore us both apart. She was the best friend I ever had, and it bothered so much to see the same amount of hurt in someone else's eyes, even his. That anyone else but me would be able to feel the same pain. over the same person, as conceited as that sounds." He kinds rubs my back, and looks at my face, trying to emphasize. "We broke into arguments easier, and disagreed on things we normally agreed on. One day I told him that this wasn't going to work, and he agreed that we would move on. I missed him so much, more so than his sister. And now that he's back, I don't know what he intends to do, I mean we're both past the pain, and grieving, but, Mulder, that's not the only thing that I've come to get over." He pulls me close into an embrace wrapping his arms around me loosely, letting me depart from them at will, which I do after a few moments. I sit up, turn to face him, getting more serious. "Mulder, I'm going to ask you a favour, and I don't want you to feel pressured, or anything, this is just, a question." "Anything." He says. "I want you to come to Charlie's wedding." "Me?" "You don't have to if you don't want to." I say right away. "No, it's not that, it's just, well. Wouldn't the hate for Fox Mulder, flow through all the Scully siblings?" "Mulder," I start shaking my head. "As much as love Melissa and Bill, there is a certain bond I have with my little brother, that is in a way... indescribable. Bill is just being an older brother, and Melissa, I know did find the good inside you. They wouldn't blame you for anything that's happened - " "Bill does. And Melissa would too." "*sigh*Mulder, Bill's a jerk, you have to accept that. Now are you coming or not?" "Yeah, okay." "Good." I say touching his hand. "Thank you." He touches my hand, them gets up, and heads for the door, as I follow. He turns around, kisses me on the forehead, and leaves. What a strange occasion for a kiss. ******************************* Friday came and went, it being a holiday and all, Mulder and I stayed home, him calling me only once to make sure when to pick me up on Saturday. So here I am in my blue corset-style bodice over-top a long ballroom-like gown (though thankfully not very poofy) dress. What am I to do with my hair. My doorbell rings, that must be Mulder, at least it better be. I open it. "Mulder." Thank you Jesus. "You ready?" He asks. "Yeah, uh, just a second." I say turn on my heal to go to my bedroom. I pick up a small silver bobby pin decked with a simple diamond-like rhinestone, which I place delicately in the front of my hair. I slip on my shoes, grab my purse, and we leave my apartment. ********************* The church, or rather the backyard of the church, has just begun to swarm with people, and I've been here about five minutes. I sigh as I look out the window of the tiny little room in which stand Patricia, her maid of honour, Louisa, and the two other bride's maids, Erica and Jennifer. Erica insisted that I help her with her hair, so I can't leave to see Charlie until it's 'perfect'. Yeah, bite me, I have a gun. "Oh Dana, it's just wonderful", Patricia exclaims. "Have you ever thought of becoming a professional hair dresser some day?" "No, never." I say with a fake smile. I should get Charlie to remind me why he's marrying this woman. "Um if you'll excuse me, Patty, I just wanted to go talk to Charlie for a second." I say as I move towards the door. "Oh sure." "Thanks." I leave the room, and head for the one in which my brother is getting ready. I knock on the door. "Charlie, you decent?" "Dana, come in!" He says obviously excited to see me. "He you." I say hugging him. "You all set?" I say pulling back and taking his hands. "Yeah pretty much. But I still haven't met that partner of yours. He around?" "Yeah, he should be. But please, I don't want you to get all protective of me, or objective, or accusing, or-" "Or anything like Bill. Don't worry Danes, I've cleared my mind, I'm open to anything. If you like him, I'm sure I'll like him." I think to myself as I lead him to the empty reception hall we're using this afternoon where I spot Mulder, walking around. I turn to Charlie who gives me a questioning look. "He's not really a people person." I say to him as we walk forward towards Mulder. "Gettin' pretty crowded in here, sure you don't wanna get some fresh air." He turns around. "Hey." He says casually, but a little worried about Charlie's reaction, I'm sure. "Charles Scully, Fox Mulder." I say. They shake hands, each smiling a little. "Nice to meet you." Mulder says. "Likewise." Charlie says. There is a brief pause. Shit, what do I do now. A watch beeps. Thank God. Charlie looks down at his watch and sees what time it is. 11:17. Almost time for the ceremony. "Oh, shit. Oh, shit. It's time to go. Oh my God, what do I do. Oh shit, Dana what do I do???" Charlie exclaims obviously freaking out. "Charlie, honey. Sweetie calm down, you're going to be fine, okay. You are going to be great. The ceremony will be perfect, you will be amazing, and you are going to spend the rest of your life with the woman you love, okay?" I say holding his shoulders down. "Okay." he says nervously. "Give me one for good luck?" He says. "You bet." I say. With that I rub my fist on the top of his head in a noogie. "You've got 15 minutes to mingle, and then on with the show. Go get 'em. Love you." He leaves the hall, and goes to the altar where he greets family member for the last time before he becomes a married man. I turn to Mulder, who is eyeing me interrogatingly. "It's a kid thing." I say. "Oh there you are Dana!" Jason says startling me. "Jase. I hi." I say facing him. "You and Erica are the first to walk, so let's get going, huh?" He says, pulling me from Mulder's side. "Uh, okay. Um, meet us out there in about five minutes, K Mulder?" "Okay." He calls after me. Jason takes my hand and I feel a chill, as I look back at Mulder. I've never seen his face look so alone. ************** After the ceremony,we all enter the reception hall, where Jason immediately runs over to me to tell me how great I was. "All I had to do was walk down a long red carpet and look pretty." I say. "But you did so wonderfully." He says. He's too charming for his own good. He kisses my hand, and then my cheek softly. What is he doing? I glance around, and notice my mother and Mulder laughing together. I'm glad he's having some fun. I just hope he doesn't run into Bill. Bill's talking to Charlie. Thank God. I excuse myself to Jason, and make a break for where Mulder and my mother are talking. They stop talking and greet me. "Hi honey!" My mother says."You were great." Mulder nods in agreement. "Thanks." I say smiling. "Charlie looked nervous as hell up there." Mulder says. "Oh, that's just his childhood stage fright kicking in. Old fears never grow out in this family, I guess. Patty, on the other hand looked like she had done it all before, she did it so smoothly." "Oh I bet she has." I say, rolling my eyes. "Well, she's a really sweet girl." Mom says. An old friend of my mother's cuts in and her and my mother start talking, so I take the opportunity to take Mulder by the hand and escort him to a table, we sit, and wait for the silence to blow over. "Your friend Jason, is pretty touchy-feely, I take it. He almost looks like he possesses you." Mulder says avoiding my eyes. "He's just being himself, Mulder." "He has that big of an ego?" Mulder says looking at me. "No, he just... I don't know. I guess he just can't break the old habit of physically proving possession, when there's nothing prove." "I see." Mulder says looking out into the crowd of people. Maybe I shouldn't have dragged him out here like this. *********************** We all sit down to eat at three large dining tables. Charlie and Patty sit together, Mulder is beside Charlie (Charlie insisted), and I sit across from them both - beside Jason. Charlie sits down after making a toast to his new wife, and I smile at Mulder, who doesn't seem to be enjoying himself, but smiles back. Suddenly, Jason stands up. "I'd like to make a toast to a certain beautiful lady in the room, and make a proposal of both marriage and eternal love." He bends down to me, and my knees and hands are shaking. "Dana Scully," he says taking a small diamond ring from his pocket and putting it in front of me. "Would you do me the honour of being my wife?" The whole room is dead silent, and I feel completely numb. I put my hand up to my face to cover my mouth, then put it back down again, and try to breathe. I'm at a loose for words. I turn to Charlie who looks surprised, and then to my mother, who's looks are telling me to say yes. Then I look at Mulder, who's face is totally blank. His looks both of alarm and of dread. What do I do? I stare at the ring in front of me, and say to myself 'This could be yours to wear, you could have the life you've always wanted with the use of a simple word.' But what about Mulder. There are so many people here. They all expect me to say yes. But what about Mulder? I'm going to cry, I know it. I have to say something - anything - quickly. "Um." I start, looking from the ring to Mulder (who is still pale), and then to Jason. "Uh." Shit. I force a smile and say it "Okay." Cheer wrings out through the whole hall, as Jase slips the ring on me. Oh, God. What about Mulder? A tear falls from my eye, and Jason kisses me on the lips for the first time in so long. I wait a few moments so that everyone in the room talks amongst themselves. I excuse myself, and run as fast as I can to the washroom, crying the whole way there. ***************** As I leave the washroom, my eyes tear stained (thank God for clear mascara), Charlie greets me. "Hey, you left pretty quickly, are you okay?" He asks putting his hand on my shoulder. "I'm fine, just overwhelmed." I lie. "with joy, I suspect. Congratulations, Danes." He says facing me. "I don't want to marry him, Charlie." I say abruptly. "I said it because I didn't want him to feel hurt or embarrassed in front of all those people, I mean, every one of those people was expecting me to say yes, except for one person, who is the only reason I wanted to say no." Charlie looks at me and nods his head. "I won't tell," he says, "But you'll have to sooner or later." "Are you talking about Jason or Mulder?" I ask turning to the crowd of people, half of which are on the dance floor. "Both." I walk over to where Jason is standing with some friends, and take his arm, leading him away. Once we're by ourselves, he smiles at me, and kisses me again. I pull from the kiss, look away from him. "Is something wrong, Darling?" He says looking into my eyes. I pause, then speak. "Jason," I pause again. "When we broke up, after what happened to Lauren, I always thought that the day would come when we would get back together. But the day never came. I got into two other long term relationships, that definatly weren't as strong as ours, and eventually made my decision to go to the FBI. I've been working there for 7 years, and a lot has happened to me that you don't know about, and could never understand. Things that prevent me from having a normal life." "Like what?" He asks, worried. "Like the fact that I'm unable to have children, that because of job, my sister was murdered, and they are all complicated things that prevent me from being with you again." "Dana, I'll understand, you know I will-" "That's not the only thing." I turn to Mulder, who sits alone. "In the past few years, I have come to realize a love that has always been hard to see. You are great. You are. But I can't help the fact that I am meant for someone else." Jason looks away from me, and pauses to speak. "You're breaking off the engagement." He says. I say nothing. I give him the ring, and he walks away. ********************* Jason says goodbye to some people, and then leaves the church alone. I watch him leave, from where I am standing. I feel like terrible, but there is something else I have to do. I walk over to Mulder, who is twirling his straw in his Coke, looking as pitiful as ever. He doesn't notice that I'm here. "Hey." I say casually. "Hey." He says perking up. "You, uh, set a date yet?" "Yes I have. About three weeks from never."I say. He looks up at me, surprised. "Mulder, Jason is not who I want to spend the rest of my life with. I told him that, and we are no longer engaged." Mulder looks so happy, but he's covering it up. "That's, uh, too bad." He says. There is a silence. "You, uh wanna head out?" I say "Sure." He says smiling. We get up, give our regards to the bride and groom and leave the chapel. We head out to the parking lot, and Mulder takes out his car keys. "Mulder." I say looking up at him as we stop in front of the car. "Yeah?" He turns around to face me. I look deep into his eyes, as he does to mine, and I reach my hand up to his cheek, and rub in over with my thumb. We lean forward, and stop in a kiss that I will never forget. It lasts for several moments, until we break away. He leaves his eyes closed a bit longer than me, then opens to find the exact amount of happiness on my face. "That's all I had to say." ***************************************************** ***************************************************** Again: I LOVE FEEDBACK!!!!! mulderlove@hotmail.com I hope you liked it, but if you didn't, I'd like to know too.
