Scully was standing in Mulder's doorway with a terrified expression on her face. She was staring at the green leather couch that doubled as Mulder's bed at night. Soon tears began streaming down her face. As she approached the couch, she reached out and touched the neck of the body that was sprawled on the couch in a position no human could possibly achieve. Thoughts were running through her mind so quickly it was hard to make sense of them all. First and foremost was, "Why the hell can't I find a pulse?!?" second was, "Am I dreaming or am I really seeing this?" She was praying for the first. Finally, she found a pulse--faint--but it was there. Scully grabbed the phone and called 9-1-1. The ambulance finally arrived. Quickly they loaded the badly bruised and beaten body of Mulder into the back and sped off. Scully had only one thought as she followed the ambulance to the hospital--find whoever did this to him and make them pay. When she arrived at the hospital, Skinner was there waiting for her. He immediately asked her if this was another hoax. She was so infuriated by this she couldn't speak. When Scully finally found words, she said: "You sick bastard! How could you even ask that question when saw them wheel Mulder in?!? How do you think that could be faked? He stood there and let me beat him? Well, think again." "If you weren't there when it happened, who do you think was, Scully?" "Krycek," replied Scully bluntly, "he's had a vendetta against Mulder and me for a long time. This is a way he can make both of us suffer at the same time." After hours of waiting, a nurse cam out to report on Mulder. "He's pretty badly beaten up. A few cracked ribs, broken arm, split lip. Looks like he put up on hell of a fight though. We found two blood types on him. His, which is O+ and an A- sample." Scully thanked the nurse and called the FBI headquarters to find out Krycek's blood type. Sure enough it was A-. She left the hospital at 6 a.m., went home showered, changed and drove to Mrs. Mulder's house. She arrived at 9:30 a.m. When Mrs. Mulder saw only her at the door, she knew something was wrong. "Dana, what is it? What's happened?" "Mrs. Mulder," Scully started, "Mul--I mean Fox was beaten up last night. I called him around eleven and he didn't answer his phone so I went to his apartment to see if he was okay. When I got there, I found him lying on the couch unconscious and barely alive." "Oh my God. How is he? Is he alright???" "He's stable now, but he was in ICU overnight. I'll drive you to the hospital now if you'd like. I'm headed back there anyway." "Yes, yes, please Dana, that would be great. Just let my grab my purse." When they arrived at the back at the hospital, they found that Mulder had taken a down turn. It seems one of his ribs had pierced some tissue and had caused internal bleeding. They were prepping him for surgery to correct it. The surgery lasted eight hours. When the doctor came out, a huge weight was lifted off of everyone. "He's doing fine. The surgery went well. No complications, but he's still a little out of it. You can see him now." Both Scully and Mrs. Mulder thanked the doctor. They went in to see Mulder and could not believe their eyes. He was hooked up to so many machines: a respirator, EKG, EEG, blood pressure monitor, and many more. Mrs. Mulder immediately started crying. Scully tried to comfort her. Scully finally arrived home at 2 a.m. and called her sister, Melissa. "Missy can you come to my apartment? I really need to talk to someone." "Sure Dana, I'll be there in twenty minutes." As soon as Melissa arrived, Scully burst out in to tears. "Oh Missy, Mulder's be beaten up badly. He's being kept alive almost entirely by machines." "Dana, don't worry Mulder's strong (not to mention hot) he'll pull through this. If not for himself, for you." "What do you mean for me?" "Everyone sees it but you Dana. He loves you and you love him, you just won't admit it." "I do not love Mulder. We are partners and that is where it ends, Missy." "Dana don't try to sell that to me. If you didn't love him, you wouldn't be sitting on this couch crying over him. You never could lie to me, could you?" "Missy, that's a bunch of bullshit. When I was kidnapped he cried over me. Any loyal partner would." "Really Dana, 'loyal' is that what they're calling it nowadays? When your partner had a key to your apartment and you have one to his that's 'loyal' okay, whatever." "Missy, what the hell are you trying to say? That Mulder and I are sleeping together? That's absurd." "Why is that so absurd Dana? You are a beautiful woman and he's a handsome man, who know eachother better probably than your own mothers do. Why is so hard to believe that you could have a relationship? Just because you work together doesn't mean it can't or didn't happen." "Missy, it didn't happen and will never. We are strictly work partners and nothing more. Even if we wanted to build something together its against Bureau policies. If anyone found out, at the least we'd be reassigned, worse fired." "Dana, no matter what you think in your mind, your heart knows you love him. For whatever reason you're denying it, I don't know but someday you'll realize that what you have with Mulder is so incredibly special. Do you know how many women, myself included, would like to be able to have that kind of relationship with a man? Well, I'll tell you the answer is greater than you think. One day you will kick yourself in the ass for not realizing it sooner and taking advantage of it while you had the chance. I'm sorry to do this but I've gotta to go I have work tomorrow. But if you want to talk again let me know, okay Dana?" Melissa's words had a great impact on Scully. She went to sleep thinking about everything she had said and wondering just how much of it was true. Scully was awakened the next morning to the sound of the phone ringing. "Scully," she said while answering it still half asleep. "Miss Scully, this is Doctor Freemen. Your partner has regained consciousness. He's been asking to see you." "I'll be right there." Before she left she called Mrs. Mulder to tell her the news. When she arrived at the hospital, she immediately headed for Mulder's room. "Mulder, how are you feeling?" she said as she leaned over to kiss him on the cheek. "A little sore, but I'll live. I heard that you were really upset when they brought me in." "Didn't they tell you? I was the one who found you. I called 9-1-1. I went to your apartment around eleven because you didn't answer your phone. I was worried, I wanted to make sure you were okay. I knocked and you didn't answer so I let myself in and--found you unconscious and barely alive. Oh Mulder I was so afraid I'd lose you." "Dana, I would never leave you. I would fight a million men to protect you. I love you." Scully sat there partially shocked and partially over-joyed. "I love you too, Mulder." When she looked up, she saw Melissa standing outside the door peering in. "Mulder, I'll be right back." She left the room to talk to Melissa. "Missy, what the hell are you doing here?" "Dana, I see you finally admitted to yourself that you so love Mulder. It just took a little help from him to realize it." "Missy you were right, I never could lie to you, could I?" "Nope a sister always knows when her sister is lying Dana." Scully went back to Mulder's room and found him asleep. Mrs. Mulder arrived a little while later. "I'll leave you alone with your son, Mrs. Mulder." "No, Dana, stay. There's nothing we have to say that you can't hear." "No, really Mrs. Mulder, you need some time alone with him." "Dana, please stay. I want you to. I feel as if you are a daughter to me because you are so close to Fox. You probably know him better that I do." "Alright, I'll stay. But if you want me to leave, just let me know." Mulder and his mother talked for a while. Then Mrs. Mulder left because she wanted to be home before it got dark. Scully and Mulder sat there looking deep into eachothers' eyes. "I meant what I said before Dana, even though I was still a little groggy." "Me too Mulder, I said what I meant and I meant it with all my heart. I'm glad its finally out in the open. Missy and I had a long talk last night and she helped me realize it." Scully left the hospital that night the happiest she'd been in a long time. Mulder was fine, his mother thought of her as a daughter, and Missy had helped her realize that she loved Mulder. It seemed the only thing left to do was find Krycek and "repay" him for his deed. Little did she know that what seemed to be an almost perfect life, was going to be shattered into a million unmendable pieces. While walking to her car she was approached by a Well-Manicured Man. He told her that her life was in danger. Someone was out to kill her. She was told that there were tow ways she may be killed. The first, she'd be shot in her home or garage with an unregistered weapon that would be left at the scene, and the second was her assassin was someone close to her, someone she trusted. They would arrange a meeting unexpectedly. When Scully had just about reached her car, she remembered that she had asked Melissa to come to her apartment again to talk. The Well-Manicured Man's words stuck in her mind, "You'll be shot in your home or garage..." The two places Missy either was or will be. She depressed the accelerator and hoped the man had just been sent to scare her. When she was a block from her apartment, she heard sirens. As she turned the corner, her worst nightmare became a reality. Police and ambulances swarmed outside her apartment complex. She pushed her way past the crowds of people and finally made it to her apartment, where she saw Missy lying on the wooden floor in a pool of blood. "Ma'am you're not supposed to be here. I'm going to have to ask you to leave." "I'm Agent Scully with the FBI. This is my apartment and that is my sister, Melissa." "Well, I'm sorry to hear that Agent...um, Scully, right? But I'm still going to have to ask you to leave." "I'm not leaving damnit!! That is my sister, Melissa and I'm not leaving!! What hospital are they taking her too?!?" "Washington Memorial." Scully could not believe what was happening. As she drove back to the hospital she'd just been at, she kept thinking about what she'd seen. "All of that blood...no one could survive that amount of blood-loss. Where was it coming from? How am I going to tell mom?" When she arrived at the hospital, she called her mother and told her not to ask questions, just get to Washington Memorial hospital fast. After an hour, her mother arrived. She told her what happened and that the doctors weren't optimistic for Missy's recovery." The next morning the doctor finally came out to report on Melissa. "She's worse than she looks. She was shot at close range. The bullet is lodged in her cerebrum. we are going to try to remove it but she only has a 20 percent chance of survival." His words hit Scully and her mother hard. "Only a 20 percent chance of survival. No Missy can't die, she can't." Scully thought as tears welled up in her eyes. She decided to go talk to Mulder. "Oh Dana, I'm so sorry. I can't believe it. I know how close you two are." Mulder said gently as he held Scully in his arms. "I just can't believe all that has happened recently, first you now Missy, what's next? The first nuclear world war?!?" "I know its been a tough time for you Dana, but you've got to be strong. If not for yourself, for your mother." The next day then news Scully had been dreading was delivered--Melissa hadn't made it. She died during the operation of severe hemorrhaging. The funeral was scheduled for Wednesday. "Good," Scully thought, "two days from now. Mulder will be out of the hospital...he can come with me." When Scully told her mother that she was planning on inviting Mulder, her mother said no. Scully asked her mother, "What do you mean 'no'?" I'm a grown woman and I can invite Mulder if I want to." "Dana, don't get me wrong. I have nothing against Mulder, he's a great guy and I love him as if he were my own, but he and Bill don't get along. I don't want any trouble." "Mom, frankly, I don't give a damn if he and Bill get along. He's not coming for Bill, he's coming for me." "Dana, I don't want to fight about it. You're just going to do what you want anyway." On Wednesday it was pouring. Everyone was extremely saddened by what had happened. Scully was the only one not crying. Bill came up to her and defiantly asked, "Don't you give a damn Dana, that our sister is dead? How does it make you feel to know that had it not been for your job Missy would still be alive?" "Bill, you're not being fair. You know I would give my own life for Missy to live. I don't know how you have the nerve to stand there and ask me that." With that, Scully turned to Mulder and said, "Let's go." While they were driving back to Scully's apartment, Mulder said to Scully, "I know he was upset, but that was still no reason for him to treat you like that Scully." "Mulder, its okay. Everything will be fine, he just needs some time to calm down, then he'll come to his senses." When Scully got home all she could think about was what Bill had said at the funeral. "Maybe he's right. If it hadn't been for my job Missy would still be alive. For the first time in his life, Bill actually has a point." That night, she cried herself to sleep thinking about what her life would be like if she left the FBI. She realized that without the FBI, her life would be empty and decided to stay. The next morning Scully arrived at work, surprised to find that Mulder wasn't there already. He showed up a few minutes later with a single red rose and asked her how she was holding up. "I'm fine now. Last night I was so upset about Bill that I was considering leaving the Bureau." "You should have called me. You know I'm always there for you, no matter what time it is." "I know. It was just something I had to decide on my own. Though, half a dozen times I was ready to dial." The day progressed as usual. Mulder had his "out there" theories and Scully had her "scientific explanations". When they split up for the day, that's where things got a little nerve-racking. As Scully got out of her car outside of her apartment, someone grabbed her from behind. When she got a look at her attacker there was no surprise whatsoever. "Krycek, so we meet again you back stabbing, double crossing bastard." Scully replied with absolutely no fear in her voice. "Ah Scully, frisky as usual. Heard you put up one hell of a fight when you were kidnapped." "You were in on it! You gave that psycho my address! Then you almost killed Mulder while he was trying to help me! Why are you back? To put me through hell again?!?" "Damn! Can't pull a fast one on you can I? I'm sure by now you've figured out that I was the one who beat up your partner, right?" "I figured that out long ago. Mulder must have hit your pretty hard--your blood was all over his hands. Now you are the prime suspect. But I'm sure you knew that already, right Krycek?" "So what they say about you is true," Krycek replied in an odd voice, "you're not just some dumb redhead playing doctor, are you? You are a brainy beauty." "Flattery will get you nowhere fast, Krycek," Scully replied harshly, "so I know you didn't kidnap me to talk about your attacking Mulder. What the hell are you going to do to me?" Scully began to get nervous. They'd been driving for quite sometime. Scully then remembered that Krycek hadn't taken her gun when he kidnapped her. She could shoot him and call Mulder for help, but if he saw her reaching for her weapon, her life was over. When they finally stopped in a field, who knows where, Scully knew it was now or never. She drew her gun, took off the safety and fired at Krycek. She hit him with the first round, after all, she was pretty good with a gun. She then called Mulder on her cell phone. "Mulder," he replied in a monotone voice as he answered the phone. "Mulder, its me. I need your help. Krycek kidnapped me. I shot him. I need your help," Scully said in a frantic voice. "Where are you Scully?" "I don't know exactly. I'm in a field somewhere off route 9 I think." "Scully stay put. I'll be there as soon as I can." Within an hour, Mulder had arrived with back up. Krycek was pronounced DOA at the hospital. Scully was so distraut over the events that had occurred over the past few days, she began hysterically crying on Mulder's shoulder. Mulder drove Scully back home and helped her to her apartment. Scully invited Mulder in. While inside, they shared memories of their siblings. At 2 a.m. they decided to call it a night. Before leaving, Mulder and Scully shared something neither of them would ever forget--a passionate kiss. COMMENTS!!! PLEASE I WANNA KNOW HOW MUCH IT SUCKED!! FLAMES ARE GOOD!
