Dedicated to the most adorable twins I know, Tiggy and Chloe, this is for you. A World Without CC as God By Toni Bartholomew A long dark tunnel. A pin prick of light. A rush of air and I jolt awake. Cold sweat pours off me, my bedclothes and night shirt soaked. I must have been having a nightmare, but there is more to it than that. I have a terrible feeling growing in the pit of my stomach. I reach to flick on the bedside light. I blink to adjust my eyes. Then a soft knock at the door reminds me of why I woke. A dry cough echoes through the wood. A key turns in the lock. Metal scrapes on metal. "Scully?", the whisper of the voice does not disguise its speaker to me. The fear dissipates and my breathing slows. "I'm in bed Mulder. What do you want?", I call out through the darkness. "Hang on. Hold that thought. I'll be right with you." "You're always with me Scully." Mulder muttered quietly to himself. "What did you say?" asked Scully as she emerged from the bedroom clad in a long, silky robe. "Er...Nothing, nothing. Just take your time. That's all." "Oh, right. Well it's okay. I'm here now. So what was it you wanted? And why couldn't you just phone me? It's not as if you usually have any qualms about calling me in the middle of the night.", she said as she cocked a curious eyebrow at him. "I...I'm sorry. It's just that this really can't wait and it needs to be said in person." "What's wrong Mulder?", asked Scully, suddenly concerned. She took his hand and lead him to sit on the large, cream sofa. He tried to hide his shiver at her touch, but it wasn't a very good act. "Um...Well I don't really know where to begin. I had it all planned out before I came over here and now I've forgotten most of it. So...Maybe I ought to just go. I'm sorry I woke you. I'll see you on Monday.", he gabbled and moved to stand. Scully placed a hand on his arm to stop him. "Mulder, don't leave. It's obviously important. Just calm down and tell me slowly, okay? Whatever's wrong, we'll get through it together." Mulder leant forward, put his head in his hands, and tried to clear his mind. He hadn't been this nervous since the high school prom. What was wrong with him? Why did her mere presence do this to him? Okay, silly question. But he'd always been able to control it in the past. What had suddenly changed? Scully quietly got up and walked to her kitchen. "Would you like something to drink Mulder?" she called back over her shoulder, "Tea? Coffee? I even have a bottle of wine here somewhere." "Sure. Thanks. Whatever you're having.", he replied, absentmindedly. Scully walked back in carrying two wine glasses and a bottle of red wine. She handed one glass to Mulder and leaned forward slightly to pour out the dark liquid. Then she filled her own, placed the bottle on the coffee table, and rested back on the soft cushions. Mulder began to speak, carefully keeping his eyes focused on the glass in his hands. "Have you ever thought about us Scully? About you, and me, and...well...about us?" "Yes Mulder. I've thought about us a lot. Especially recently." "Have you ever considered that there might one day *be* an us?" he asked warily. "There is Mulder.", Scully replied, slightly confused, not daring to hope that he might actually mean what she had been dreaming about ever since they met, almost five years ago. She continued cautiously. "We're partners, and friends. Doesn't that count as us?" "Yes, of course. But that's not quite what I meant." "Oh. You mean you want more.", she stated matter of factly, trying to keep the tinge of hope and longing out of her voice. Mulder didn't reply in words. He simply nodded his head slightly. "Mulder. Look at me.", Scully commanded. He remained motionless, staring down at his glass. Scully slowly reached out, gently put a finger under his chin, and turned his head to face her. Their eyes met. She didn't say another word. Instead she carefully leant forward. Pausing just inches from his face. Then brought her lips to his in the sweetest kiss either of them had ever experienced. Scully pulled away first. "Me too.", she said quietly, with a slightly bashful smile. ----------XXXXX---------- The TV flicked off, it's watcher couldn't bare to look any more. "They won't get away with it." He fumed, "I simply will not let them. Who do they think they are? I mean really. They think they can just come in here, scatter some fairy dust around, and poof, I'm suddenly gonna let them be a *couple*. Well they're wrong. I'm not gonna let them get away with it. If they think they can pull the wool over my eyes that easily, they've got another thing coming.", Chris Carter was seeing red, charging round his office, swearing fit to burst. He'd always planned that the relationship enjoyed between Special Agent Fox Mulder and his FBI partner Special Agent Dana Scully would be a good one, they needed that connection for the partnership to work, for the trust to form, to let themselves rely on each other in times of crisis. But a connection between body parts was to be avoided at all costs, it simply would not be tolerated, and it didn't matter how much the fans pleaded, it would NEVER happen, at least not while Chris Carter was in charge. Problem was, it seemed he'd given up that control. What with the pressure of running Millennium as well and all, he'd decided it was best to let Fox take power. What he hadn't bargained for was that the executives at Fox agreed totally with the relationshippers' point of view, 'getting horizontal', as the fans had dubbed it, was definitely a good thing, guaranteed to bring in the crowds. Executives are renowned for their enthusiasm for sex on TV. After all, what had the success of Baywatch proved if not that a good bum and big knockers would always make up for a poor script. Okay, so the scripts were definitely good enough to uphold a very decent sized audience, without the need for sex, but there was always room for improvement. Although Gillian Anderson may have lacked the big knockers, being the thinking man's crumpet definitely made up for that. And David Duchovny, though no longer at his youngest, still had an amazing power over a large proportion of the female viewers of the X-Files. And so it seemed entirely logical that the shows stars would eventually become an item. Carter had only given up his hold over the show a matter of months ago, and already the execs had the writers breaking the strictest rule he'd ever laid down. So what if it had actually worked well. So what if it looked as if the writers might actually be able to pull it off without ruining the carefully spun fairy tale. So what if it had been so good that it had actually made Carter smile, despite his fury. He would have to put a stop to it. As soon as he'd logged on to find out what the fans thought that was. They were bound to be having a field day. ----------XXXXX---------- "Surfer1013 enters the Landing Zone" Hi Surfer! Hi everyone. So who here is shipper? Me! And me! Oh definitely! It was brilliant! And they looked like they were enjoying it too :) I thought CC'd never let them. But you know he gave up control. Yeah, but I kinda thought he would've put it in the pay off contract that they'd never get to kiss. Guess he wasn't that smart. Or maybe he wanted them to be together really but didn't want it to happen while he was in charge in case it didn't work, then he couldn't get blamed. That'd make sense. But he didn't bet on it being such a success. He thought the actors and writers couldn't pull it off but now he's stuck without getting the glory for it too. His choice. I say he either likes it or lumps it. Well he's gonna have to now, isn't he! Absolutely. He won't get any sympathy from me. "Leia enters the Landing Zone" *Private from Spooky2 to Leia* I thought you'd never get here :) *Private from Leia to Spooky2* Had to put the little one to bed *Private from Spooky2 to Leia* How's she doing without CK? *Private from Leia to Spooky2* Not bad. She likes you. And she spends so much time with the sitter while we work anyway, I'm not sure she's even noticed really. *Private from Spooky2 to Leia* I'm glad, she's a good kid. Now let's have some fun with them shall we? *Private from Leia to Spooky2* You go for it spooky, I'll let you set the scene, then jump in as well. *Private from Spooky2 to Leia* You got it, here goes, wish me luck :) GA and DD played it so well. There has to be something for them to draw on there. I agree. No one could be that realistic without having some truth to it. So do you think they're doing it? *Private from Leia to Spooky2* Very romantic! Hmmm. Maybe they've been holding off like their characters; like their characters were. Wouldn't surprise me if there was something. They have a divorce in common now. *Private from Spooky2 to Leia* Nice going, just so we don't forget the bad stuff we've had to wade through to find each other! But if you wanna go that way. I've been through that. It helps to share your problems when a marriage breaks down. They must have at least talked about it. Troubles create bonds. If the files have shown us anything it's that you have to share the stress. *Private from Spooky2 to Leia* Don't get too poetic on me. After all, I'm meant to be the English major. *Private from Leia to Spooky2* Well if you're not gonna let me explore my creative side, maybe I'll just go back to CK's bed! *Private from Spooky2 to Leia* You know you couldn't put up with the whiskers, besides, I thought you liked to express your creative side in *my* bed, and on my chairs, and in my bath, and in my shower. . . . . need I go on? :) *Private from Spooky2 to Leia* You are bad! But I love you anyway. ;) I know you do. Me too. :) Oooppss, that was meant to be a private, just ignore it folks. You idiot, now you've blown our cover! You just did it too though Yeah, guess I did, okay, truce? You got it, but we're still in the open here, how much do wanna let them know? They wouldn't believe us anyway, so I don't think it really matters. They didn't believe me last time. But now they'll all have heard about what happened then, so they might be more likely to go along with it, just so they don't offend me if it is me, even if they don't believe it's me. Shut up Spooky, you're babbling. Whatever you say ma'am Sorry about that people. I guess you might like an explanation, now Spooky's shut up for a bit. Would you believe me if I told you I was GA and Spooky2's DD? Oh yeah right, and I'm CC!!! Like we're gonna believe that. Come on, our motto is Trust No 1, right guys? But you have to admire his logic. We could go along with it, even if we don't believe them really. I told you they wouldn't believe us! I'm going to bed, you gonna come over and join me?, I'll wait up?, I could do with the comfort. Sure, I'll come, love you, see you soon, yeah? Right, 20 minutes? I'll be there. Bye everyone, sorry for dominating the convo, hope you don't mind, it really is us, but I guess you haven't learnt to separate reality and fiction yet, maybe some other time Yeah, bye people, see ya at the next convention maybe "Spooky2 comes back down to Earth" "Leia comes back down to Earth" ----------XXXXX---------- Carter logged off as well and sat back in his chair, lost in thought. Maybe it *was* them. But even if it was, he'd covered his tracks well, no one would guess his true identity. He hoped not, he'd taken great care to portray himself as a non-fan of CC. But he was worried. If they had been GA and DD, and they had been behaving as themselves, then they were a couple. He'd have to give them a call. And then it dawned on him. If he called GA at home, and DD was with her, then it'd seem pretty likely that they were telling the truth, without him having to admit he'd been there as well, they wouldn't even know they were confirming his growing suspicions. It was the perfect plan. Now if he just waited another quarter hour. . . ----------XXXXX---------- Gillian's phone rang. David hadn't arrived yet and she sent a quick prayer up, afraid he could have had an accident on his way over, before picking up the receiver. "Hello, Anderson residence" "Uhh, hi Gillian, it's Chris" "Hi, how are you doing? Oh no, you saw the episode didn't you." "Yes. But I'm not angry. Well I am, but at the execs and writers, not you." "Good, I was a little worried there. Actually, while we're on the subject, could I ask you something?" "Sure, go ahead, what's on your mind?" "Did it work? I mean, I know you liked the idea but held off 'coz you thought it'd harm the show. Did it work, or have we ruined it?" "Don't worry. It worked. The sparks were flying and there wasn't a pink fluffy heart in sight." "Thank you. You know how much I respect your opinion. And I have to admit, I thought it worked too, but you can never be sure when you're on the inside, I needed a second opinion. Sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but did you call for a reason? Or just a chat?" "There was a reason actually. You're a great actress, I'm sure you could've pulled it off for an audience of people who don't know you personally, but, and I hope I'm not out of line here, I do know you, at least I think I do, and I sensed some reality between you two. I was wondering whether we just hadn't talked in too long, or if you and David have, how do I say this?, moved on in your relationship since I left." Gillian took a deep breath before answering, You're right, we've moved on. He's meant to be coming over tonight in fact, if you wanted to speak to him, no point calling his house." "Oh, I see, can I be nosy and asked how it happened?" "Sure you can", silence. Chris chuckled a little, she was gonna make him ask, "So how did it happen then? " "Well, when we got the script for tonight's episode, we had a little talk about how to play it. And then David decided to demonstrate to me how he thought the scene ought to go. So we kissed, and then, one thing led to another. And by the time he got around to telling me he loved me, let's just say, there wasn't gonna be any way we could turn back at that point. And that's how", she finished matter-of-factly. There was a knock at the at Gillian's end. "That'll be him. Do you wanna talk or . . .? " she didn't want to say 'Are you gonna leave us to it', but that's what she meant. "Just one more question, then I'll leave you two love birds to it. " "Okay, let me just go let him in first, one tick", she put the phone down to open the door, welcoming David with a kiss before returning to finish her conversation. Once she'd picked up the phone again, occupying her hands, David took the opportunity to slide his hands around her waist and lower his mouth to her neck. She playfully swatted him away, but didn't try too hard, the attention he was paying her soft skin sent fire coursing through her body in waves of pleasure. Chris could hear her soft moans and they were beginning to turn him on, he knew he had to get an answer quick, before he heard too much more, "Are you Leia? " he asked, picking his words carefully so as not to reveal his own visit to chat if he was wrong. "Are you Surfer 1013?" she soon replied. "Pact of silence?" "You got it, not a word will pass my lips." "See ya Gill, at the next convention maybe." "See you Chris. I'll call you soon. It'd be good to get together again. Things haven't been the same without you. " He smiled to himself, "Same here. Bye" The End Apology - I hardly ever go on chat myself so if it doesn't sound realistic to you, I'm sorry. I should have done more research, I would've loved to but money and time being the scarce commodities they are, I just didn't get the chance. Anyway, if you're reading this then you got to the end so it can't have been that bad. "If I never knew you, I'd be safe but half as real. Never knowing I could feel a love so strong and true I'm so grateful to you, I'd have lived my whole life through, lost forever if I never knew you." >From Pocahontas, but doesn't it just sound like Scully to Mulder? :)
